In July 2024, SECI held a competitive bidding for 1.2 GW of solar PV projects, Paired with a 600 MW/1200 MWh energy storage system, Which shocked the industry with the discovery of a tariff of INR 3.42. This left a CFO of a chemical company seeking answers to many of his challenges: → Is solar plus storage the best renewable energy solution? → Does it outperform wind-solar hybrids? → Is it more cost-effective than coal? → Is it the future for 2024 and beyond? → What does the INR 3.42 tariff mean for daily power costs? Struggling with these questions, We helped the CFO with a detailed analysis of the bid, explaining: → RFP conditions and the outcome of the bid → How the INR 3.42 tariff was calculated → Weighted average cost of base load power → Our conclusion Here's my recommendation to Industrial Consumers: It is intriguing to see how the INR 3.42 tariff actually results in an INR 5.6 tariff for baseload power. With the right management strategies & optimized power usage during Solar hours, Industrial consumers can reduce this cost! A solar plus storage solution can be achieved for much less than INR 5.6, Likely falling between INR 3.42 and 5.60! P.S. According to Wood Mackenzie, the global energy storage market, excluding pumped hydro, is set to experience exponential growth, reaching 159 GW/358 GWh by the end of 2024 and expanding by over 600% by 2033. This surge will result in nearly 1 TW of new capacity, driven by the increasing demand for clean energy and falling battery storage prices. While the U.S. will increase storage capacity under the IRA, it’s China that’s expected to lead this growth due to its booming solar market, with an average annual addition of 42 GW/120 GWh over the next decade.
