The Oxide Computer Company and friends podcast episode on Crucible, their storage solution, has an interesting discussion on using Ceph. The product they make is "self-hosted" and they really couldn't provide a storage solution that required them to operate and, in the end, they evaluated Ceph as just requiring too much of an operator presence. Terrateam also offers a self-hosted as an option and we deal with this as well. This is one reason we are very selective in which frameworks and libraries we use. In our opinion, it's too much of a liability to have a lot of dependencies. Reliability is key, if you have a self-hosted solution, otherwise you'll drown in support tickets. If you're considering making a self-hosted offering, really make sure you've done your homework on the failure modes of your dependencies.
