Translation by Jan Morris of a poem by John Ceiriog Hughes John Ceiriog’s words came to mind today 19th January 2024 with the news of the rapid changes that will be happening at Port Talbot with the dismantling of the two blast furnaces. The steel works were opened in the 1950s, say 2 generations ago, and will be a distinctly different place when the electric-arc furnaces are up and running. Other steelworks have had a shorter life. For example, the Spencer steelworks near Newport was opened in the 1960’s and steel production stopped in 2001. RML have worked on sites where the remains of abandoned mines and quarries have been reclaimed and given a ‘new pattern’ that we designed to last a bit more than a generation. We had in mind that a post-reclamation period of management of 30 years was the minimum that should be allowed for, so that nature could be allowed time to develop, at minimum cost to the local community, areas that that would be ecologically valuable and create well-being for several generations.   Our diagram from the 1990s illustrates the approach.
