According to the CDC, the suicide rate among construction workers is more than five times higher than the average suicide rate in the United States, with one out of every 2,000 construction workers killing themselves annually. To address the issue of social isolation, UA Local 286 journeyman welder Sean Miller and journeyman pipefitter Collen Farris created The Tribe. Local 286 experienced more than a dozen preventable deaths among its members over the last few years. These tragic losses highlighted the urgent need to address mental health within the Local. The Tribe’s mission is to create a sense of community and support among Local 286 members. “We call it The Tribe because it’s not about the individual; it’s about all of us,” Miller said. A contractor asked about my hat today. 1,056 construction workers were killed on the job in 2022. In 2021, the #construction industry had one of the highest rates of suicide of any industry according to the CDC at over 56 males and 10.4 females per 100,000 workers. Among the Occupation Groups in 2021, Construction and Extraction had a suicide rate of 65.6 for males and 25.3 for females. According to the Ruderman White Paper (2018) on Mental Health and Suicide of First Responders, "the suicide rate for firefighters is 18 per 100,000 compared to 13 per 100,000 for the general public." Building Safety Monty is as good a time as any to talk about mental health in the construction industry. #buildingcodes #buildingsafety365 #buildingsafetymonth

The construction industry remains a stressful profession. It can take you to the highest of high’s, but unfortunately, can bring on the lowest of lows. Not only should one recognize the need to ask for help but everyone should be observant and willing to help out our fellow human. We need to remove the stigma of being afraid to ask for help. A work lifestyle should never trigger negative thoughts to the point of suicide. Let us be there for one another. #suicide #prevention #mentalwellbeing.

Tough Topic Ahead Warning: In my personal life, I am an advocate for mental health so this topic is easy and familiar for me, however, I do recognize that it's not as easy for some so I added the warning. The Construction industry may have celebrated Construction Safety Week a while back, but did you know that June is celebrated as National Safety Month? So many different safety topics I've read and yet there was only one that I saw that I felt compelled to shine some light on and that is the safety of the mental health of the men and women in Construction. Statistically, the rate of men dying by suicide in Construction is raising at an incredibly alarming rate. In fact, the attached news article is quoting the CDC as reporting "For every 100,000 male construction workers, 56 died by suicide in 2022, according to CDC data. That compared to 32 suicide deaths per 100,000 men in the general population. Males have a significantly greater rate of suicide than females." ❓ I know when we hear the word "safety", most usually we don't think about mental health, but I only ask, what could we do (individually & corporately) to be more intentional about keeping the mental health of these men (and women) safe? How do we create a safe space for these people to be vulnerable when the industry itself is often stereotyped as being the industry where there are no crybabies or whining? I'm genuinely curious how we could do this. Please feel free to share any thoughts or ideas in the comments. 🗣 #ConstructionMentalHealth #ConstructionSafety #NationalSafetyMonth2024

Beginning in one month, Construction Suicide Prevention Awareness Week runs September 9-13, 2024. During that week the construction industry will come together in a powerful moment of remembrance to honor those we’ve lost and to re-commit to preventing further loss of life. The rate of death by suicide for construction workers is 5.5 times the rate of all other construction fatalities on the jobsite. The rate of suicide in construction is more than four times higher than the general population. (Source: BLS) With more than 8 million (and rising) workers in the industry, it is critical that we place as much focus on mental health in our workforce as much as we do the physical. FHC will be participating to show our commitment to getting every person home and back to the shop and jobsite healthy every day. We’re looking out for our employees, our project partners, and our competitors. We encourage you and your company to do the same for this important cause. #suicideprevention #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness

“When you're more likely to be killed by your own hands than to get killed in a job site accident, that's a crisis in our industry.” The blueprint for success in construction shouldn't come at the cost of lives. An estimated 6,000 construction workers were lost to suicide in 2022. That's not just a statistic—it's a wake-up call echoing through every job site. Long hours, isolation, and pressure are the hidden foundations of a crisis we can no longer ignore. 🔔Mental health checks should be as routine as safety harnesses. 👷♂️Peer support networks? The mental health crisis in the construction industry is a crisis that desperately needs to be addressed. 56 suicides per 100,000 male construction workers annually; each of these tragedies represents a life, a colleague, or a friend. As industry leaders, we must shift from a "tough it out" mentality to one of open dialogue and support. Let's make mental health check-ins as routine as safety briefings. Your voice could be the lifeline someone needs. #ConstructionIndustry #MentalHealth #LeadershipStrategy #ciasp #artba #artba #dynapac #ftba #acaf #johndeere

Mental health is as important as physical health. "The suicide rate for construction is the second highest of all industries: 53 in every 100,000 workers. This is attributable to a number of factors that often compound: financial distress, long working hours, separation from family and substance abuse." "In construction, safety can’t just be about your body: Your mental well-being is as important as your physical health." "In construction, caring about people has to be part of the culture." https://lnkd.in/gqyvrj63 #constructionhealthandsafety #constructionsafety #mentalhealth #constructionmanagement
