Due to medical advancements, improved protocols for organ preservation and increased awareness, donation after circulatory death (DCD) has emerged as a valuable pathway for organ donation. DCD has also increased the number of organs available for transplantation and thus has helped reduce the number of patients who are waiting. In this blog, Stephanie Osier, a transplant donor coordinator, demystifies DCD by exploring the process, benefits and ethical considerations.
