I had the opportunity to participate in the Week of Education, presenting a poster on Challenge-Based Learning (CBL), an innovative teaching method being utilized at @ECIU University and beyond. 🔍 What did we investigate? We explored the usefulness of the CBL approach for a distance Premaster. 🔧 How did we investigate? We treated it like a challenge, combining the CBL approach with the ADDIE model for course development. 💡 Key Insights: **Engage:** - how to tackle authentic problems and real-world challenges in a premaster. - how to foster self-directed student learning through reflection, documentation, and sharing. - how to involve stakeholders. **Investigate:** - Emphasize constructive alignment, starting with intended outcomes and aligning teaching and assessment accordingly. - Aim for societal impact, highlighting the importance of communication, teamwork, negotiation, and student-centered learning skills. - Use differentiated assessments, each with its own intermediate formative and final summative evaluations. - Implement personal development plans and portfolios with concept mapping. **Act:** - Ensure accessibility for all by offering a distance course. - Delivere core knowledge in a focused, non-integrated manner. - Include mandatory courses in basic statistics, academic skills, and research skills. - Chose climate adaptation as the challenge to integrate, activate, and apply knowledge. - Employe innovative assessment methods. 🌟 Usefulness of CBL: - Amplifies the impact of our program by fostering societal change through real-life applications. - Prepares students for the master’s program by enhancing self-regulation, activating pre-knowledge, and preventing fragmentation of learning. 'Is academic training/research a hindrance for practicing engineers ?' - we have all been part of this discussion, I certainly have! Understanding the role and its requirements is key to this. As a practicing engineer , the solution is driven by so many critical external factors, which have to be considered (refer to the flowchart). Academic research provides the missing pieces that can greatly optimize the existing solution. As a practicing engineer , it's more realistic to restrict research to that one tricky parameter which is driving design and commercial risk.
