Berlin is a very multicultural city and this is one of the reasons why we have a housing problem — everyone wants to be a part of it. Companies are similar to cities. If you are bright and diverse you will attract wonderful talents that will lead business to success. On the opposite side teams that lack diversity and consist of members from the same cultural/social background can create unforeseen risks. This can hinder innovation and lead to plenty of issues. Yes, a team of similar backgrounds breeds comfort BUT risks becoming an echo chamber, stifling innovation and fresh perspectives. Limited viewpoints mean limited solutions and the risk of missed opportunities. Then it leads to biased hiring and bigger problems. Mono-culture often unintentionally breeds bias in hiring, choosing someone they are used to, who will be comfortable with their common culture. Next comes "The Isolation Trap" — the majority alienates others, fostering exclusion that poisons workplace culture. Embracing diversity is vital for tech companies to thrive, not just a buzzword. I worked in both diverse and mono teams so first hand I understand the dangers. I have now been an employee of Deutsche Telekom for 15 years to the day. In this day and age, it's not a given to work for a single company for such a long time and is rather unusual, especially in our fast-moving industry. In my professional environment, however, I see many people who have dedicated themselves to #teammagenta for as long or longer than I have. I think that speaks for the qualities of my employer and the working environment it offers its employees. I am often asked what has motivated me to work at Telekom for so long. For me, the answer is very clear: it doesn't feel like I've been doing the same all these years. I have been constantly developing, learning and trying out new things. I've always had the opportunity to work on the topics that are significantly influencing and changing our industry. Over the years I was involved in interactive television, digital reading and publishing, voice-based user interfaces, artificial intelligence and data-based customer experience, this meant I was always dealing with things that were very current and had a significant impact on the industry and society. For me, the fact that Telekom, as a company with a long tradition and an incredibly broad customer base in Germany, has always had the courage and ambition to actively shape these developments at the forefront is a large part of its attractiveness as an employer. Today I look back a little and forward a little.
