My colleague Gerald Tan spoke to Lianhe Zaobao on the rise of the solo economy and its impact on consumption patterns in Southeast Asia. According to our recent consumers report with Meta and DSG Consumer Partners, single households make up 12% of Southeast Asian households and shifts in household sizes are expected to be most pronounced in Philippines, Singapore and Thailand, which are expected to see a 20% increase in single households by 2030.

This post by Amina Mattern is extremely relatable. The question "Where's home" is always a challenge for #ThirdCultureKids. I continue to face this question in my 30s as I navigate new challenges in my life in Canada. Despite this, hiring #TCKs or TCAs (Third Culture Adults) is one of the best things companies can do in my opinion. ✈ TCKs have the ability to adapt to changing situations and challenges. Constantly moving and adapting to different places, people, and situations makes them incredibly resourceful and creative. ✈ They have the empathy and sensitivity to understand people in difficult and unexpected situations. ✈ Most, if not all of them are bilingual or multilingual and this puts them in a better position to liaise with a company's clients, stakeholders, and customers from different cultural backgrounds and countries. This includes a stronger understanding and respect for a wide range of cultural customs. The above might not be specific only to TCKs. However, these are definitely some of the qualities that make them stand out.

𝗠𝘆 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗯𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗻! Over the last two months, I’ve worked and traveled throughout the Philippines and Indonesia. I’ve seen a lot of cool stuff. Met a lot of very cool people. And, I’ve had a handful of magical experiences. Meeting my beatbox friend is one of those magical experiences. --- 𝗜 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘁 𝗮 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗹 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗮 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗼𝗻. Beautiful part of the country; very slow pace to life. As I turned the corner one morning, I heard bird chirping sounds from the kitchen, shortly followed by some of the best beatboxing I’ve ever heard. All of the sounds coming from one of the staff members at the hotel. Over the course of my 3-day stay at the hotel, I listened to this kid relentlessly work on his beatboxing craft, mixing and matching different beats and sounds while moving gracefully throughout the hotel grounds. --- 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝘄𝗲’𝗱 𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘀, 𝗜’𝗱 𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗵𝗶𝗺, “𝗱𝘂𝗱𝗲, 𝘆𝗼𝘂’𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝘄𝗲𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲! 𝗞𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗶𝘁 𝘂𝗽!” It felt good doing so. I mean, I couldn’t really help it; he’s that good. And, each time I told him, I could feel his energy shift; it gave him juice. He stood up a little straighter; his face beamed with confidence. A powerful reminder of how far acknowledgment goes. I took a break, now I’m back and #openforwork 💪 After wrapping up an incredible chapter with Getir, I wanted to embark on an adventure. So, I journeyed to Japan for a two-month solo trip–my first Asian experience. There’s something about throwing yourself into the unknown headfirst and discovering what's there. These experiences remind me that whatever life throws my way, I can take it and transform it into memorable moments. ✨ If I ever feel lost I will remember that I had a full conversation with a chef of a small family restaurant in Matsumoto without having a common language. Communication transcends words; it's about the effort and energy invested. ✨ If life gets hard I will remember that I hiked/ran 150+ km with more elevation than I’ve seen living in the Netherlands. I can do hard things! ✨ If I ever feel down I will remember how quickly I thought on my feet when I or fellow travelers found ourselves in a pinch. ✨ I will remember I traveled 29 827 km on my own, hearing and learning from countless stories. Everyone's story matters. Now that I’m back, I am ready to take on a new challenge! Head of quality assurance, Paulo Saravia, has been with Zeald since September 2016. A ZEALD HIGHLIGHT? In my early years with Zeald, I travelled over from the Philippines to meet the team in New Zealand - it was great connecting in person. On one trip I visited Hobbiton… but unfortunately, I found no hobbits. MOST-USED APPS? Chrome on my desktop and TikTok on my phone. My littlest one almost owns my phone and she loves TikTok! INSPIRATION SOURCES? My wife and two daughters are my “why”, my purpose. Instagram’s @earthofficial - I love looking at good photography about our earth. LinkedIn generally - just people/groups sharing work environment success and cool stories. DIGITAL OPPORTUNITY IN 2023? Trying out new technology - AI, platforms, apps - if you don’t try, you don’t know what they are or what they can do. I’m currently exploring voice search and its capability in relation to SEO and ecommerce. FAVOURITE THING OUTSIDE WORK? Going out for a meal, and basketball. PEOPLE MAY NOT KNOW… I love cars, racing, and photography. Back in college, I started Davao’s first website providing content to car enthusiasts - Castrol was so impressed I was flown all-expenses paid around the Philippines to cover car events. We have been involved since the inception of the project, handling consultations, project management, and renovation, and the challenges have become harder with the COVID-19 outbreak. As HEART Residence is an initiative by private trustees from Yayasan Lim Yee Hoh with a fondness for the arts, we need to target a niche market comprised of individuals from creative backgrounds (art students, artists, or those pursuing art or performing arts as a career). Given our specialisation in student accommodation, venturing into co-living with a specific audience is a novel experience for us, and we were fortunate to receive assistance from our new division in digital marketing. It is through trust that we have managed to navigate the obstacles and attract tenants from artistic backgrounds to become part of the HEART community. We are delighted to share that during the second year of the community festival of art, PESTZA, through our team, we managed to secure collaboration with an international lifestyle brand, Skechers, for our client. As they say, the rest is history. We take great pride in being part of the journey that elevated this local non-profit initiative to the global stage through strategic collaborations. At The Purple House, our proven approach, which seamlessly integrates creativity and influence, has indeed become a success story that we wish to share.
