As recently at 2021, the Pew Research Center reports that 23 million Americans don't use the internet and 23% of Americans don't have broadband access at home. Digital access is a super-social determinant of health (SDOH) and essential to aging well at home. The federal Digital Equity Act of 2021 carries $2.75 billion of funding with three aims: 👉 broadband connection for all 👉 device ownership for all 👉 universal digital literacy skills for safe and comprehensive internet use Historical variations in resources and infrastructure investment position individual communities at different points along the path to digital equity. Each of these three aims needs to be assessed to develop a collaborative approach to target the unique problem of digital access in individual communities. After attending the Mountain Connect conference this week in Denver, I see the need for three distinct actions that we can take to engage better with the movement for digital equity: 👉 educate ourselves on digital equity Read about covered populations here: https://lnkd.in/gMayc_AU. 👉 educate ourselves on funding opportunities You can read about it here: https://lnkd.in/gDYRAdkg In Colorado, you can receive updates from our Digital Equity team here: https://lnkd.in/gKeJBtnt 👉 identify local coalitions In Colorado, you can connect with the Denver Digital Equity Coalition: https://lnkd.in/gJtCU8z9 This initiative touches all of us, if not directly then through our relationships to family, coworkers, and community. There's a lot of great energy around the work in Colorado and across the country. I'm excited for what's next! #agefriendly #innovation #digitalequity #digitalaccess #broadband

Sharing here a pre-proof publication on a scoping review which I had the rare opportunity to work with fellow colleagues Ingrid Wilson, Peter Kay Chai Tay, Shiou Liang Wee, Roxanne and Phoo. Took a few years but happy to share the findings which may inform next steps forward tackling social isolation for homebound older adults:) Yes! This was ENTIRELY not my area of expertise. It was incredibly challenging to venture into "new territory", away from my exercise physiology background. At the same time, it was refreshing to explore from another (social) perspective and to learn the ropes. [Mapping of Technological Strategies for Reducing Social Isolation in Homebound Older Adults: A Scoping Review] Key highlights: •We conceptualised a Social Technology Framework to better inform technology design and implementation. •We need early and concerted efforts to identify homebound older adults. •Social technology needs to be cost-effective and rapid-to-implement. •Training and support can help empower the homebound older adults to adopt technology, which reduces likelihood of social isolation. I hope this review may bring some value or insights to those working within the healthy aging space (technology inventors, community partners, healthcare professionals, social workers, scientists & policymakers alike). Technology can be a double edged sword in affecting #socialisolation. Compulsive use of #technology to the extent that it replaces in person connection can increase social isolation and #loneliness. But technology can also be a lifeline, particularly to home bound #olderadults to reduce social isolation. The key lies in the design, implementation and support in such tech innovation. My colleagues at Singapore Institute of Technology offers a Social Technology Framework to help map tech strategies to reduce social isolation. Thanks Xiang Ren Tan for leading this work. Glad to be part of this review that links technology with social sciences in an important area related to #AgeWellSG.

The recent Older Adults Technology Services (OATS) from AARP report highlights an important reality: adopting technology is more than just giving older adults access to devices - it's about fostering confidence, connection, and community through digital tools. Technology can enrich lives when it's purposefully designed to empower; a goal of ours at Go Icon. Whether it’s simplifying communication, enhancing engagement, or integrating essential services, our goal is to complement the human experience, not replace it.
