"I've noticed that people in tech aren't as concerned about your background, as long as you can do the job. Learning on the job is the norm, and that's how everyone gets started in this field," explains Toronto-based Data Engineer Crystal Li. In 2022, Crystal swapped an Accounting career for one as an Engineer and she says there are few fields as rewarding. "It's important to remember that your previous experience and strengths are still relevant, even in a new environment. Having a different set of skills/experience helps you bring a fresh perspective to your teams." Ready for a change? Join our team → https://lnkd.in/gDv3TG9i #LifeAtUber

I just received an email informing me, there were other candidates more qualified than me. The position was for someone working remotely to connect with local food venues in San Antonio for uber eats. As a veteran with over 20 years of restaurant and retail management, 10 years with contact center, 3 years as a remote independent remote contractor and about 5 years as an Uber driver I fail to see how you could find someone more qualified than me. Except maybe I am too old. Where is the inclusiveness?

Your previous experience shows breadth and signs of that critical spark of innovating - seeking the best that can be done with challenges of a particular position and context.

I worked with a great Developer with a high school degree. With IT execs with backgrounds in zoology, history or psychology. Unlike most industries we judge and promote on ability. Perhaps that is why the top most valuable companies are IT companies. Other industries are ossified and worried about job security.
