It's been a four-year journey 🤔 Curious about how it all started?
# Chapter 1 - (100 Videos in a Minute and an Almost Enterprise Pilot) #
Back in 2020, while reading an article about Google DeepMind’s experiments with turning webpages into videos, a simple yet groundbreaking thought struck me:
What if every text in the world could be transformed into videos?
While we initially offered these Social Widgets for websites, We learned from early users that not all businesses had websites, but almost all of them were active on Instagram and Facebook.
I was fascinated by the portability of video formats, realizing that our widgets could live in many environments, not just the web.
Curiously, this epiphany came just as I was diving into marketing trends for 2021, which proclaimed short video content as king.
Coming from a front-end development background, we were seasoned in dressing data with user-friendly interfaces. But was creating a video any different?
Initially, I thought of it as just adding a "moving front-end" at 24 frames per second 😅
Oh, how naive I was!
I lately learned that videos had many more dimensions:
- storytelling
- script
- voiceover
- music
- media
Not to mention the processing time and server-side costs.
(In the early days, my partner Alberto Roman cautioned me about the complexities of video production. I was eager to push ahead quickly, but I soon realized the value of his insights. Looking back, I'm profoundly grateful for his patience and understanding as we navigated those challenges. )
I posed a challenge to Kenazo Anthony and Yulier Camilo Garrido Garrido:
"Can we generate 100 videos in a minute?"
They nailed it, using some AWS magic that has become a core part of our secret sauce to this day.
We also brought on Luis Ernesto Reynaldo Jordan to design and implement a landing page with static data to showcase predefined videos created by Jorge Sibila and Emmanuel Arias Ibarra for demo purposes.
Following this, Julio Jimenez and Olga Roman crafted our first UI and Bel Koffman as our business development rep (really shined—she's a rock star at it.). With such a dynamic team and cutting-edge product, the stage was set to conquer the world.
I reached out to knowledgeable friends in product, marketing, and sales for feedback. Thanks to Darren D. Sturges, Philip Rothaus, Jonathan Liu, Marcela Ganem, Simon Yule and many others. They helped shape our early ideas, and we almost landed a big enterprise project because of it.
Our first version of the product was simple—an Excel file. Each row had video specs. Fill in the columns, and suddenly, you have as many videos as rows. But during a user interview, Jonathan Liu pointed out a big gap:
"Ok, guys, we can make 100 videos now, but how do we link everything? Where does the info come from?"
It took us until January 2023 to crack that code.
To be continued... Drop a comment if you're curious about how we solved it! :)
