Exciting times for the future of research and innovation in Europe! The University of Bergen (UiB) just released a position paper with our key recommendations for the EU’s upcoming framework programme for R&I (FP10). As discussions progress, we emphasize the need for increased investments across the entire R&I landscape, from curiosity-driven research to challenge-driven solutions. Some key recommendations include: ▶ Prioritizing excellence and open competition. ▶ Strengthening successful instruments like the European Research Council and Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions. ▶ Supporting basic research to tackle major challenges like climate change and health risks. ▶ Properly integrating social sciences and humanities into challenge-driven projects. ▶ Enhancing innovation funding to explore diverse knowledge transfer pathways. The Future Potentials Observatory (FPO) held its 5th International Workshop on November 28, 2024, dedicated to obtaining an overview of its research directions in the fields of Geopolitical Frontiers, Innovation Horizons, Digital Futures and Design Futures in an East-West context. The event was moderated by Péter Szabadhegy, the Manager of International Relations and Chair of the Advisory Board at FPO, and Nuno Morgado, Leader of the Geopolitical Frontiers Project at FPO. Also, a speech was given by Prof. Dr. Zoltán Oszkár Szántó, Scientific and Executive Director and Chair of the Executive Committee at FPO.   The workshop featured contributions from twelve esteemed FPO researchers, namely Federico Pachetti, Nuno Morgado, Takashi Hosoda, Esztella Varga, Sára Koczkás, Zoltan Csedo, Máté Zavarkó, PhD, László Nádai, Sylvia Graczka, Ákos Schneider, David Csuros and Karina Vissonova, Ph.D. The workshop was highly engaging and thought-provoking, and it set the stage for the researchers' and the FPO's next steps.

Mattias Björnmalm, secretary-general of the CESAER group of European science and technology universities, said the deal was an “excellent” way to start the new year and a clear “win-win” for both sides. “This agreement underscores the importance of working together as a continent, including the UK and Switzerland, in R&I to ensure Europe remains a global leader in advanced science and technologies that increasingly shape our societies. The Young Academy of Europe has endorsed an open letter to President Ursula von der Leyen, initiated by the Initiative for Science in Europe and signed by Nobel laureates and major academic organizations (including our academy, Academia Europaea, EASAC, LERU, ALLEA). The letter urges placing #research, #innovation, #science, and #technology at the core of the #European #economy, calls for a well-funded research portfolio, and requests a strong advocate as the next Commissioner for Research and Innovation. #Voice of Young researcher in Europe

The idea of developing a policy-based Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) and a European Competitiveness Fund is very interesting and reflects the dire need to better focus and steer EU investment. However, it also comes with challenges.
