I’m a big believer in tables – they create community, connection, teams, decisions and moments that matter. The table also symbolizes Elanco’s vision – Food & Companionship Enriching Life. From the protein and dairy on the table to our pets that lay at our feet – from meals to meetings, community and connection to crucial questions with colleagues, friends and family. There’s something incredibly powerful that happens when we sit down, slow down – share a meal and get to know one another more. Inspired by this, I’m excited to launch a LinkedIn newsletter, Shared Table. We’re laying it all out on the table in these conversations exploring big topics from climate and sustainability to access to pet care to the challenges of leading in a post-COVID world. Whether we’re in the back of a vet clinic hearing about the challenges veterinarians face daily to dialoguing with veterinary experts on challenging areas like dermatology, to a barn sitting around hay bales discussing livestock sustainability and climate neutral animal agriculture. These conversations are a great way to connect as I’m traveling on the frontlines of our business. Each connection makes Elanco and me better. Up first is Dr. Frank Mitloehner, Ph.D., Director, UC Davis CLEAR Center, Department of Animal Science, at UC Davis, aka the Greenhouse Gas Guru. The conversation comes on the heels of global temperatures hitting their highest levels in recorded history – adding to the hottest year scientists have ever seen. With a need for solutions to slow down the impacts of climate warming, we get real about how cattle can be part of the how to enable climate neutral animal agriculture. At Elanco, we’re driven to make life better for animals because we know it makes life better for all of us. Watch for more Shared Table conversations with outstanding leaders within and around animal health, exploring the impact we’re having and the vast potential that exists when we stive to make life better. #SharedTable #WeAreElanco #Sustainability #AnimalAgriculture

Dr. Mitloehner is a HUGE asset to the dairy industry! He is spot on that we need to own up to our part of GHG emissions and spearhead these innovations that not only allow us to be part of the solution but that actually can be the path to dairy farms being primary sources of renewable energy!

Impressive! During a visit to a dairy operation in Germany, I was amazed by the integration of automated machine technology. This farm allowed cows to walk into the milking stalls at their convenience, where they were milked automatically. The process was entirely voluntary for the cows, which not only reduced stress but also optimized milk production. What's even more impressive is that the milk was pasteurized on-site, and customers could bring their glass bottles to fill directly from the milking area. This direct-to-consumer approach minimized waste, eliminated the need for packaging, and ensured that customers received the freshest milk possible. This experience illustrated the profound impact that sustainable practices can have on both the environment and the industry. The use of automated technology not only enhanced the well-being of the animals but also supported the farm's operational efficiency and reduced its carbon footprint. It’s a model that could benefit dairy operations worldwide, especially when shared across borders. Could cows be also be used in Greencare? I look forward to your upcoming discussions and the continued exchange of ideas that drive us all towards a more sustainable future.

Great insights on such an important topic. This would be of interest to my friends at Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef (CRSB)

Dr. Mitloehner's work on the complex relationship between livestock and climate change is highly valuable, especially given the urgency of finding solutions to reduce global emissions. His research at the UC Davis CLEAR Center is helping to provide much-needed clarity on this critical opportunity. #GHGGURU
