How do you show care and dignity for your patients? It's hard sometimes to ensure that this thought is at the forefront of our practice as medical professionals. We are busy. We have piles of paperwork and a roster of patients to see each day. However, as I read the Patient Dignity Question (PDQ) by Harvey Max Chochinov, I reflected on a recent interaction with a patient. Had I shown an elderly male patient dignity? How he would've answered the PDQ? Dr. Chochinov's study culminated in a single question that has proven to improve doctor-patient communication - “What do I need to know about you as a person to give you the best care possible?” Dr. Chochinov recently received the Canadian Cancer Research Alliance Outstanding Achievement in Cancer Research Award for his work at CancerCare Manitoba.
