Abdominal aortic aneurysms can be deadly, but they are often underdiagnosed and, or, undertreated in women. To help address this disparity, our researchers have harnessed powerful artificial intelligence (AI) software to show how these aneurysms can grow faster in women and may require more rigorous surveillance. “There is not a lot of data about aneurysm growth in women,” said Misty Humphries, interim chief of Vascular Surgery and senior author on the study. “So, there's not a lot of information about when women’s aneurysms should be fixed or reimaged or even how they grow compared to men’s. This is the first time this data has become available.” Learn more about this new study: https://lnkd.in/du6NS7PJ

If you're wondering, like I am, about surgeons' perception of #AI-based clinical decision-making, I have a link to an interesting article. It describes the results of an international survey on AI-enhanced decision-making to assist trauma and emergency surgeons (650 surgeons from 71 countries participated). Despite the obvious advantages of #aiapplications (for instance, the volume and complexity of data AI can analyze substantially differ from what humans can do), in the case of trauma and emergency surgery, there are much more concerns about AI as a trustful tool. The study reveals a division within the trauma and emergency surgical community, with some surgeons enthusiastic about AI's potential while others lack understanding or mistrust of AI-enabled decision-making aids. I'd also like to highlight that the study, unfortunately, doesn't delve into specific AI technologies or tools, making the findings more general and not tailored to specific AI applications. How do you utilize AI or plan to do it in your #neurosurgical practice? I'd be glad to hear more about your experience. https://lnkd.in/dWFj67s3 #aidecisionmaking #clinicaldecisionmaking

📌 In some of my posts, I’ve already mentioned the importance of efficiently utilizing hospital historical data. The thing is that this data processed and analyzed with advanced algorithms leads to more efficient and effective healthcare delivery. Predictive analytics supports hospitals in their quest to provide high-quality patient-centered care. As an example of one of the use cases, you can read more about the #ML model built and trained based on the data accumulated in 2015 – ’22 in Taizhou People’s Hospital Affiliated to Nanjing Medical University. Researchers developed an algorithm to predict the risk of #postoperative surgical site infection after spine surgery. Patient information and both preoperative and intraoperative risk factors were considered. The link to the study is in the comments. ❓ What are the key considerations for successfully implementing ML models in healthcare settings? Let's discuss best practices and challenges. #spinesurgery #predictiveanalytics

If there ever was a “Year of AI”, it would be 2023. With the launch of new general-purpose services like GPT-3, as well as specialized services like MedPalm for healthcare, AI was center-stage, shaking the foundations of every industry. With so much focus on AI alone, the critical human-AI partnership has taken a backseat - the ‘better together’ idea of humans collaborating with AI, to both build new tools, and to get higher quality work done more efficiently. In this webinar, experienced healthcare AI leaders working across areas like dermatology, surgery, and radiology discuss the nuances of the human/AI partnership. They’ll discuss the critical role that clinicians play in helping to build AI, provide feedback to model developers, and eventually collaborate with new AI-powered tools. MediTech Innovations- Artificial intelligence for Head transplantation(Real or fallacy) Head transplantation is a highly controversial topic in medicine. While some scientists believe it might be possible in the future, it's currently not a realistic medical procedure. The Idea Behind Head Transplants: The concept involves transplanting a human head from a donor body to a healthy recipient body with a functioning brain stem. Proponents envision this procedure as a potential treatment for severe spinal cord injuries, neurodegenerative diseases, or even terminal illness Potential Roles of AI in the Future While AI can't currently make head transplants a reality, some speculate about future possibilities: Surgical Planning: AI could potentially analyze medical scans and create detailed surgical plans for complex procedures. However, even the most sophisticated plan wouldn't overcome the fundamental challenges of nerve connection and immune rejection. Robot-Assisted Surgery: AI-powered robotic arms might offer greater precision and stability in surgery compared to human surgeons. But again, this wouldn't address the core biological issues that prevent head transplants. #ArtificialIntelligence #BME #medicalinnovation
