UCLA Health recently hosted the annual convening of the Healthcare Anchor Network (HAN), where more than 300 leaders from 55 health care centers across the United States joined together to strategize improvements to community health. Johnese Spisso, president of UCLA Health and CEO of the UCLA Hospital System, highlighted the importance of the conference during the CEO/Leadership plenary session, saying, "I think it gives us an opportunity to be a learning environment for how we can work together with our community to really start making some significant changes." Medell Briggs, MD, MPH, MSHS, chief of UCLA Health Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, co-led a session on mitigating racial and socioeconomic health inequities by investing in under-resourced communities, saying, “If we’re going to continue to promote greater health, especially within historically marginalized and divested communities, we knew we had to lean into those communities and try new community-partnered approaches to transform health and social well-being.” Read more: https://ucla.in/463bJCP

On this day, the St. Louis Integrated Health Network (IHN) commemorates and honors the legacy of Michael Brown, Jr. who was taken from us way too soon. We also stand in solidarity with Michael’s family and friends, striving for a safer and more just and equitable society. Ten years later, it is important that we all revisit the call to action outlined in the Ferguson Commission report, “Forward Through Ferguson: A Path Toward Racial Equity.” (https://lnkd.in/gqAFRMqQ) Championed by Bethany Johnson-Javois, former IHN CEO and Managing Director of the commission, one of the signature priorities named in the report is assuring access to affordable health care. IHN was born out of the necessity to ensure access to quality and affordable healthcare for historically excluded communities. As a trusted partner, we hold ourselves and those with whom we partner accountable to advancing health equity. We center ourselves in the fundamental truth that health equity cannot be realized without racial equity. Racial equity is achieved when all communities reach their full potential through the elimination of policies, systems, and cultural messages that reinforce differential outcomes by race. Recognizing that practices of the past and present have shaped current gaps in health outcomes, the path forward for St. Louis requires us to mobilize and leverage the power of our community, partners, and systems to collectively disrupt these patterns. In honor of Michael Brown, Jr., IHN will continue to challenge systems and change structures that impede access and opportunities to wellbeing. We offer peace and comfort to Michael Brown, Jr.’s family and friends, and to broader to St. Louis community who was touched by his spirit. Health equity is a growing distinction between health systems that discuss in theory from those actively making a difference in their communities, as emphasized by Avonia Richardson-Miller, EdD, MA, CDE®, Chief Diversity Officer of Hackensack Meridian Health. In this recent video, she highlights the growing number of regulatory mechanisms that assess health equity in today's health systems. https://hubs.ly/Q02DHDX20 Earlier this year, a report from Ernst & Young found the majority of healthcare providers are not ready to meet shifting health equity regulatory requirements introduced by a number of agencies and firms, including CMS and The Joint Commission. Last week, over 60 representatives from states in our 21st Century (#21C) Learning Communities came together in-person in New Mexico to discuss the current state of public health transformation across the 18 current 21C states, share strategies and innovations, and identify actionable strategies in areas related to public health infrastructure and systems transformation. We thank our New Mexico 21C colleagues for the warm welcome and 21C participants for their energy and engagement. Key takeaways include: 1. Tools to strategically envision, prepare for, and create the future of #publichealth. 2. Action steps for 21C to take related to communications and messaging, the Foundational Public Health Services (#FPHS), #workforce and more. 3.
