Join our Current Legal Problems Lecture on 'Accessibility and the Limits of UK Equality Law: Time for a UK Accessibility Act?' ⚖️ Prof Anna Lawson (University of Leeds) will critically reflect on the extent to which equality law in Britain is now, 30 years after the Disability Discrimination Act, in fact working to embed and enhance accessibility. Our Inclusive Partner The Law Society of Scotland published a guide on improving disability and neurodiversity inclusion in the Scottish legal profession in July In their own words: "The guide offers practical information and advice on how organisations can embed disability and neurodiversity inclusion in their processes and procedures, and foster an inclusive, open culture that benefits all colleagues. The guide is made up of 10 sections covering: developing a positive culture; disability inclusive recruitment; role models and lived experience; engaging colleagues, champions and allies; reasonable adjustments; using the right language; changing how we write; non-visible disabilities; fluctuating and recurring conditions; and further resources to explore" Accompanying the guide is an introductory checklist of questions that firms can use as a tool to help identify areas to work on and drive their progress Both the guide and checklist are available on the Law Society of Scotland's website: https://lnkd.in/dAnm8N7U Slide across the carousel below to see their guide for reference Please Like/Repost/Share/Comment for your network #DisabilityJob #LawSocietyofScotland #InclusiveEmployer #DiversityJobNetwork #LikeShareComment

Is the Legal Industry Ready for Diversity? The Inclusion Challenge for Disabled Lawyers. The legal profession has a long way to go when it comes to disability inclusion. Here are some concerning statistics from an article by LawCareers.net: 🔵 Only 6% of solicitors and 6.8% of barristers disclose having a disability, compared to 16.4% in the wider workforce. 🔵 Inaccessible court buildings create significant barriers, with reports of broken wheelchair lifts and lack of accessible facilities. 🔵 Disabled lawyers are more likely to experience bullying and discrimination in the workplace. These are just some of the challenges faced by talented disabled legal professionals. The good news? Initiatives are underway. The Bar Council and Law Society have developed guidance on accessibility and reasonable adjustments. But as Reena Parmar, Chair of the Law Society's Disabled Solicitors Network, says, "actions, attitudes and culture" need to catch up. What can we do as a recruitment industry? We can champion inclusion by promoting accessible workplaces and actively seeking out diverse talent. What are your thoughts? Let's discuss how to build a more inclusive legal profession in the comments. #G2Legal #legalinclusion #diversityandinclusion

This week’s blog is – What does the Equality (Race and Disability) Bill mean for you? Amidst the flurry of employment law changes forewarned in May, and then set in motion by the King’s Speech in July, was a separate draft bill. While the Employment Rights Bill deals with the bulk of the promised changes, the Equality (Race and Disability) Bill is more targeted, directly addressing issues of disability and race pay gaps. To learn more about this bill, check out our latest blog: https://lnkd.in/dQnZ8KVT

Every year on this International Day for Human Rights the Commissioner for Children & Young People, SA, releases her Childs Rights Progress Reports. A suite of seven reports, they assess the progress South Australia has made in relation to implementation of the recommendations made to Australia by the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child. The seven areas in which Australia is falling short include child health, child justice, child protection, disability, education, the environment and physical punishment. Although there is ‘some evidence of progress’ in all seven areas, there is also no evidence of progress on some of the recommendations the UN Committee has made. This means South Australia has significant work to do before we can say we have fulfilled our international obligations under the UNCRC. 🚨 Supreme Court Issues Directive on Accessibility Rules for Public Spaces: A Critical Step Towards Inclusive India 📰 The Supreme Court of India has taken a crucial stand today, directing the Union government to frame mandatory rules under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act, 2016. This directive aims to ensure that public spaces are accessible to all, setting a foundational step toward equitable infrastructure for individuals with disabilities. This landmark directive not only emphasizes the importance of inclusivity but also mandates active steps from the government to uphold the RPwD Act in its entirety. 🔍 My Perspective: As a penultimate-year law student at ICFAI Law School, Hyderabad, I believe that this ruling marks a significant push toward actualizing the “inclusivity” envisioned in the RPwD Act. Despite the Act’s progressive mandates, a major gap has remained in execution, leaving many public spaces inaccessible. This lack of accessibility undermines the spirit of the Act and perpetuates exclusion—something that today’s directive aims to remedy. By holding the Union accountable to enforce specific, mandatory guidelines, the Supreme Court has reaffirmed that accessibility is not optional but a right. This move also highlights the critical role of judiciary in enforcing legislative frameworks, especially in areas concerning marginalized communities. As an aspiring advocate, this underscores to me the importance of not just policy creation but also diligent implementation and oversight. Let's hope this ruling leads to actionable changes that make our public spaces genuinely inclusive and accessible.
