Last week I finally got to tick a big challenge off my bucket list with an old pal of mine, Will Manners. We completed The National 3 Peaks Challenge, with a little twist thrown in for good measure; instead of driving the 450 miles between the Peaks, we cycled, in 63hrs! The simple answer is that they give me focus; fitness, good nutrition, a proper sleep regime, the opportunity to raise funds for a good cause, and most importantly, an excellent work-life balance. All the above is essential when running your own business from a home office. It keeps me sane, gives me purpose, and makes sure my body and mind are in the best shape possible to cope with anything life throws at me. 14 years ago I was struggling... I was 17.5 stone, didn't do any exercise, had an awful diet, drank too much, suffered badly from insomnia, and worked stupidly long hours. As a result, my business was suffering, my health wasn't good and I was a strong candidate for a Heart Attack or Stroke. I'm not perfect now, by any stretch, but I do have purpose and focus that keep my compass true. If you're wondering how to break out of a rut and need focus, I'm always happy to have a chat! People often ask 'What does youth led, really mean?' One of the best measures of whether a project is youth led is how the young people feel at the end of it. In the film below, it's great to hear Bee describing the Access All Areas project as 'user driven' and explaining in her own words what that means to her. From my perspective, here are some of the things that made Access All Areas a youth led project: - The idea for the projected was ignited by a conversation with someone with recent lived experience of being a disabled young person. - The shape of the project was developed through consultation with young disabled people. - Young disabled people selected a designer and the brand for the project. - At the start of the project the participants were asked about their interests and personal goals. Their answers determined the content of the initial workshops which included meeting different artists and taking part in creative activities. - From the start, the participants were given choices such as where they'd like to go on a trip and how they'd like to travel there. - Half way through the project the group were given the freedom to decide what they would like to do with the remaining time and resources. At this point their roles changed from participants to producers. - After deciding to curate an exhibition, the young producers led the project and the facilitators acted as consultants and assistants, providing advice and support when needed.
