The National Institutes of Health’s National Institute on Aging awarded $3 million to a team of UF Health researchers. Their project aims to reduce health inequities faced by people living with dementia by using artificial intelligence and electronic health records to develop a machine learning-based social risk management platform. The National Institutes of Health has awarded he UF College of Medicine and the UF College of Pharmacy with an $11.8 million grant to fight antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Leighton Elliott, MD, was a biomedical engineer who made a major career change to become a doctor. Today, he is the director of UF Health’s Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Program. His clinical practice and research focus on sarcoma, a rare bone cancer that occurs commonly in adolescents and young adults and frequently requires amputation. As part of National Physical Therapy Month, we’re proud to recognize Karl Leitheiser PTA, for his 25 years of dedication at UF Health Shands! 🎉 Karl has worked primarily with orthopaedic and orthopaedic oncology patients, helping them restore mobility and strength through expert care and compassionate support. Physical Therapist Assistants (PTAs) like Karl are vital to the patient care team, collaborating with physical therapists to ensure patients reach their recovery goals. Karl’s commitment to his patients has been unwavering, and his contributions over the last 25 years have made a lasting impact on countless lives. Keliy Fordham is a UF College of Nursing Ph.D. student and current NICU nurse at UF Health Shands Hospital. She recently received a prestigious TL1 grant from the Clinical and Translational Science Institute to investigate a prediction model for identifying babies at risk of developing necrotizing enterocolitis. This condition affects premature infants and is more common in Black and Hispanic populations. In severe cases, the condition can be fatal. Fordham plans to use machine learning to find commonalities among babies who develop the illness. https://lnkd.in/eR4i699f

Starting on Oct 1, Edward Daech was promoted to the new system-level chief human resources officer role for the UF Health clinical enterprise. Since joining UF Health in Jan 2023 as senior vice president and chief human resources officer, Daech successfully led the integration of HR functions across our multi-hospital system. Two University of Florida College of Medicine departments are teaming up to address the lack of care women receive for mental health or substance use disorders during or after pregnancy. In a collaboration between the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Department of Psychiatry, fourth-year psychiatry residents will join first-year OB-GYN residents to spend a month training in UF’s perinatal mood disorders clinic.
