Today, October 1st is National Latino Physician Day (NLPD). Hoping that we continue to bring awareness on this healthcare issue of underrepresented Latino physicians. My Latino colleagues are striving to address this problem by institutionalizing the work to improve this metric, educating the government officials to create policies that can better direct the work and effect change. The end goal of this national movement is to help achieve better outcomes for our patients and we achieve this by educating the public, including allies to this cause and each of us serving as a catalyst for change. For example, recently NHMA and other organizations worked with the Office of California Governor on signing bill AB 2080. This medical school bill will enhance transparency on who is being admitted to the medical school. In 2023, 40.4% of California's population was Latino, making it one of the states with the highest percentage of Latinos in the country. However, just like other states in the country Latino Physicians are only 6 percent. We can and should do better and we need you! https://lnkd.in/ebjvQXRk #MiamiNLPD #6percentisnotenough

What is a “holistic” physician? I saw a post about a holistic pediatrician that practices integrative medicine and it made me think, why are the two terms used interchangeably? Should they be? No. “Integrative” refers to integrating practices “not traditionally part of modern medicine.” “Holistic” refers to treating the whole person including psychosocial factors. You can integrate non traditional practices without being holistic and you can be holistic without integrating nontraditional practices. So aren’t all pediatricians holistic? Our pediatricians don’t label themselves as holistic but they ask about school, physical activity, diet, screen time, weapons in the house, seatbelts, bicycle helmets, mental health, social activity. How can you be more holistic than that?! When a physician refers to themselves as holistic, they separate themselves from the rest of the pack, the implication being that the others are not holistic. All primary care is holistic. That’s what primary care is. Isn’t it?
