🌟A historic win for EU’s #nature, citizens and our future! 🌊The #NatureRestoration Law faced the risk of rejection. However, the long calling for immediate action from society, scientists and part of the industry sector, kept biodiversity at the forefront of EU’s agenda and convinced the EU Council to seal the deal on Nature Restoration Law. 👉Being officially adopted and legally binding on Member States, the law sets planned targets to restore at least 20% of Europe’s #marine and terrestrial territory by 2030 and all endangered #habitats by 2050! 👊The challenges of our time can only be addressed through nature-based solutions for the preservation of nature and natural ecosystems. Christopher Schell, a professor in the Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management, has been selected as a chapter lead for the forthcoming National Nature Assessment. An urban ecologist who studies the social-ecological factors affecting wildlife and people in cities, Schell will guide a team of global experts from universities, research institutes, NGOs, and government agencies to write the assessment's Nature and Equity chapter. The section will delve further into the widening “nature gap” perpetuated across racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic strata, review the past and present processes disproportionately affecting nature access, and provide recommendations based in environmental justice praxis. https://lnkd.in/g9GrRESu

Last week, the #EU adopted its landmark Nature Restoration law. It is the first law to set legally binding #restoration targets for nature's long-term recovery on a continent-wide basis. In the EU, 81% of habitats are deemed of poor quality. The new law targets restoration 20% of the EU's degraded ecosystems by 2030 and all by 2050, with individualized restoration targets for certain ecosystems, habitats, and species: - pollinating insects - forest ecosystems - urban ecosystems - agricultural ecosystems - marine ecosystems - river connectivity - targets based on existing legislation (for wetlands, forests, grasslands, river and lakes, heath & scrub, rocky habitats and dunes Member states will develop and submit Nature Restoration Plans outlining how it will meet the obligations while taking national context, socio-economics, and economics into account. Plans must be submitted within 2 years and states will thereafter monitor and report on progress. #conservation #biodiversity #natureresiliency #climatemitigation #climateadaptation

Hypothetical redesign of US states based on biogeographical regions, subcultural boundaries, metropolitan areas, economic continuity, and natural delimitations. While idealistic, redistricting the nation's internal boundaries would give way for more adequate resource management and environmental policy. Amalgamating jurisdictions on a cultural basis would also mean more conformity with state laws and affinity with regional institutions.
