#NewArticle Modernist heritage and memory politics in Spain: shifting values for the adaptive reuse of Seville’s former police headquarters Plácido González Martínez The political significance of modernist heritage architecture continues to be an unsolved question, particularly its identification and conservation. The passing of legislation on memory politics in Spain (i.e. the 2007 Law of Historical Memory and the 2022 Law of Democratic Memory) offers a unique opportunity to address this unsolved question by discussing two uncharted heritage debates: namely, the motivations for the heritagisation of modernist architecture in Spain and the challenges in the adaptive reuse of modernist buildings with controversial histories. Through a documentary review of the heritagisation of Seville’s former police headquarters, a discourse analysis of intervention proposals and press articles and interviews with relevant stakeholders, this study explored how the rise of memory politics in Spain has changed the interpretation of the former police headquarters’ significance in the last two decades and influenced the choices for its adaptive reuse. https://lnkd.in/ebEezWNV

📣 Upcoming CNU32 Cincinnati Session Highlight: "Scaling up the New Urbanism: Using State Laws to Heal Our Regions." Don't miss this vital conversation featuring our very own Opticos team member, Mitali Ganguly, alongside other experts! 📅 Date: Thursday, May 16 ⏰ Time: 10:30 - 11:45 AM ET Featuring Annie Fryman, Mitali Ganguly, Patrick Siegman, & Lisa Wise 🌆 We'll explore how state laws can be pivotal in transforming our regions to foster inclusive, sustainable urban growth. Despite the efforts of New Urbanists, our built environments often fall short, constrained by local ordinances that promote sprawl and limit affordable housing. 🏘️ This session will dive deep into the New Urbanism charter, debating crucial questions that aren't just ideals but realities. What parts of the CNU’s charter can only be realized through state laws mandating inclusive and fair-share efforts. #CNU32 #NewUrbanism #UrbanPlanning

It's now great to see, a little over a year from starting the discussions with Center for Innovation, that a group of Ukrainians can follow up DOBROBAT-CFI July event in Kyiv with a meet-up in the USA. #Ukraine was invaded 20 February 2014. 9 years, 10 months and 2 days ago. Feb 2022, when my friends in Kyiv woke up to the sounds of missile explosions, many experts gave Ukraine 96 hours. The people of this great country have been extending the initial 96 hours into ~700 days with the help of Western countries, primarily with financial and military support. Ukrainians were not asking for troops, just the weapons they could fight with, and the world answered. Similarly, the #construction industry in Ukraine is asking the Western #AEC industry to contribute by sharing the know-how for the best practices of #construction so they can rebuild Ukraine beyond the initial replacement of broken windows, fixing damaged roofs, and clearing walkways. Dobrobat started by helping Armed Forces of Ukraine make de-occupied territories liveable for the local residents. Nothing fancy--replace broken windows, fix damaged roofs, clear walkways. Local residents take non-military tasks off their hands so the warriors can focus on freeing the rest of their land. The battalion of the "kindness" DOBRO-BAT. I can't wait to see my friends Dean Reed, Andrii Lakshtanov and many more working through many much-needed topics together in January.
You may be wondering why this photo of San Francisco's Union Square has a Ukrainian headline with holiday greetings.... I shared this photo earlier this week with the 12 Ukrainian members of parliament, mayors, architects, and builders joining the Center for Innovation and DOBROBAT in San Francisco for a 10-day study trip to learn advanced means and methods of construction from January 19-29. We have been overwhelmed by the amazing generosity of our community in welcoming this group. Special thanks are due to so many, but, in particular: Sharon Prince, Trimble Inc., Marc Benioff, Zigmund Rubel, FAIA David Wessel, AIC, FAPT, Dean Reed, Stuart Eckblad, Troy Thompson AIA LEED AP, Andrii Lakshtanov, Martin Fischer, Ashley Archie, Susan Fassberg, Tiany Galaskas, Tuyet Le, and April Willoughby.

🎉 Happy to share Zhen's latest publication in the Journal of Urban Affairs! 📚 This study offers crucial insights into power dynamics in collaborative governance, specifically in redeveloping heritage districts. By examining Beijing’s Dashilar, it highlights how institutional decision-making and informal power mechanisms influence urban redevelopment outcomes. Check out the full article to explore the balance of state control and stakeholder collaboration in heritage preservation. #UrbanAffairs #CollaborativeGovernance #HeritagePreservation #AcademicResearch #UrbanPlanning

I'm happy to share that our new article, co-authored with Yanliu Lin, Jochen Monstadt and Pieter Hooimeijer, has just been published! I've long been fascinated by the power dynamics in urban governance, and this study develops a model to analyze these dynamics in collaborative urban redevelopment. It offers insights into how different power mechanisms influence both the processes and outcomes of collaboration, and assesses the effectiveness of China’s latest heritage redevelopment approaches in balancing diverse and often conflicting interests. The study also adds to the ongoing discussion about power in authoritarian governance systems and fills a gap in the literature on collaborative governance and informal politics. Huge thanks to all my interviewees, and a special shoutout to Xiaomeng Zhou, Junayo He, Hongmei L. and Dan Liu for their helpful feedback! https://lnkd.in/eKh5sepD

#Utrecht #theNetherlands; more than 40, banks of the canal that surrounded Utrecht's Old Town were concreted to accommodate a 12-lane highway. Today, the city celebrated the #restoration of its 900-year-old canal. The move is seen as "preservation of history" but people like me sees it as a major step in addressing risks of #climatechange. #urbanplanning. #publicpolicy. #cityplanning #environmentalmanagement.

Open access publication drop 💥💥💥 == URBAN SURFACES RESEARCH NETWORK VOL 1 (1/3)== This publication is intended to inform research, practice, and public discussions on the role of surfaces in urban environments. It is the result of the first international workshop of the Urban Surfaces Research Network (USRN), which I established in 2023 with Konstantinos Avramidis and Tom Ward. The USRN brings together researchers, practitioners, and policy makers, to examine the roles and uses of urban surfaces, and their contribution to the formation of urban cultures, politics, and atmospheres. It is a multidisciplinary group held together by a shared empirical interest and a passion to untangle the affordances of surfaces for citizenship, belonging, media, economy, law, and justice - the list continues. USRN Vol 1 contributors: Sabina Andron ( University of Melbourne), Katya Assaf & Tim Schnetgöke (Hebrew University of Jerusalem), Konstantinos Avramidis ( University of Cyprus), Peter Bengtsen ( Lund University), Andrea Mubi Brighenti (University of Trento), Maria Chatzidakis ( University of West Attica), Anne Cronin ( Lancaster Universit), Eduardo de la Fuente (University of South Australia), Kurt Iveson (University of Sydney), David Pontille (Mines Paris - PSL), and Tom Ward ( Uppsala University). Each contributor addresses the following prompts: 1. Share a definition of urban surfaces pertinent to their discipline and field of research or practice. 2. Propose three concepts for advancing urban surfaces knowledge. 3. Introduce an example or case study of their surface-related work. I hope you enjoy your journey through these incredibly wide-ranging responses and share our enthusiasm for the work that lies ahead.
