Student Takeover: I was known as ‘lazy & slapdash’ – how a diagnoses of ADHD has changed my life. October is ADHD Awareness month and our Student Ambassador Neil is sharing his story. The 2024 theme is "Awareness is Key!" Have you been affected by ADHD? Follow Neil’s inspiring story across the week and learn how he has managed his diagnosis and is now studying for his Degree in Scottish History & Archaeology. “When I was at Primary School it as known by other names. Disruptive, dreamer, lazy, and on one occasion as a 7yr old in a small village, ‘you are backward’ that stung. That word haunted me for years. ADHD hadn’t been recognised as condition then and wouldn’t be for many more years. At secondary school my O levels were ok, not what was predicted, I couldn’t focus or revise. For A levels it was known as ‘lazy & slapdash, due to my lack of revision, reading & being ‘just in time’. I failed all 3 and went to work in the family butchers business (learnt much, became a master butcher, didn’t earn much or have much holiday leave). Fast forward though, I met my now wife, wanted 4-5 weeks holiday a year and a few good salary, so went into financial services with Prudential. Became a training consultant, traveled the UK & became a CIPD qualified trainer. In a regulated industry I passed my exams (or lose my job I guess) but at a high emotional cost, I often worked through the night to meet deadlines & be prepared to facilitate my programmes/ take CPD courses.” Since Joining UHI North, West and Hebrides Neil has been supported by our staff and student support team. They are here to help you too! || Value || I came across this YouTube shorts video (https://rb.gy/bqsb97) of Marlon Brando some years ago. The point that he is making about “value” is very important. I recently sat through my daughter’s high school graduation where 823 students got their high school diplomas. A high school diploma is needed to get a job here. The minimum passing mark is 70/100 in every subject to get the diploma in the senior year(12th standard) of school. The school gives 3 opportunities to get that 70 and only if a student is not able to clear the 3 attempts, they will be detained in the same class. The reason they give 3 attempts is because, I think the education system here believes that each student is different, their background is different, their challenges are different and there is no point in conducting an exam just once and decide who made it and who didn’t. Also, the job market neither worries about whether you got your high school diploma in your first or third attempt. As far as you can show your skill and value, that’s all they care about. What also surprised me on the day of my daughter’s graduation was, the school district celebrated special kids who got their high school diploma. I am talking about kids with ADHD, Autism kind of challenges. You can ask why not, don’t they qualify? I agree and these kids were not treated any differently is my point. They got their diplomas not after the mainstream students but right after the top 10% of the graduating class of 2024 were awarded their diplomas. It intrigued me and post the event I asked my daughter if those kids were also expected get 70/100 or are they given special considerations. My daughter said “Yes” and in a way by celebrating them right after the top 10% of the students, the school district wants the rest of us to know that these kids were on the downside of advantage and were relying purely on courage to get to the place where they were standing, while many of us in mainstream take things for granted. What “skill and value” one has matters and we don’t have to compare us with anyone else. Like they say, “why fit in when you were born to stand out?” We all have our own unique talent but identifying that and bringing it out is the challenge. I like this scene (https://rb.gy/2cgxek) from the movie “The Blind Side”, which shows how to not stop at identifying talent, but also explain it in a manner where one understands and uses it. f you have not watched “The Blind Side” please do when you get a chance and thank me later. 😊 Thanks, Vasu ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Movie Monday is a weekly feed written by our CEO, Vasudevan Swaminathan, where we dive into all things cinema + business + life. Education, or the ‘process of learning’ has the power to create opportunities and transforms lives. It’s an essential human right and public responsibility. Yet it’s not something everyone has equal access to, both globally and in Australia. With ADHD, the journey of learning to learn brings unique challenges. The struggle with focus, time management, and staying on track can make it like navigating a maze, or swimming upstream against the current. While neurotypical learners tend to catch that wave in to shore. We’ve been there. And while we’ve persevered, we acknowledge on 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 that not everyone has the opportunities or support required to do this. That many people get left behind or are still grinding an uphill battle with ADHD challenges every day. At work, school and at home. The work we do is in enabling people with ADHD to build the mindset, habits and toolkit they need to continue learning, growing and thriving with ADHD. And that’s why. In our experience, learning isn't always a straight line. Education isn’t just about classrooms and textbooks. It's about empowering people to learn in a way that suits them best. Hats off to all of the schools, teachers and organisations out there working tirelessly with us to better understand how they can support neurodiverse learners in schools and workplaces. Academic Coach | Mathematics & Chemistry Tutor | Specialist in Learning Difficulties | Empowering Teachers for Better Learning Outcomes
over the past month i have been putting forward the learning difficulties experienced by our learners. Today we put across: *Balancing School and Extracurricular Activities for Learners with ADHD: A Key to Success** As we move through the week, it’s crucial to recognize the importance of balancing schoolwork and extracurricular activities, especially for learners with ADHD. This balance not only helps in academic achievement but also in personal growth and development. Extracurricular activities provide a structured environment where learners with ADHD can channel their energy positively. These activities help in enhancing focus, building social skills, and boosting self-esteem. However, maintaining this balance can be challenging without proper strategies. Here are a few tips: 1. **Create a Consistent Schedule:** A predictable routine helps manage time effectively. 2. **Set Realistic Goals:** Break tasks into smaller, manageable steps to avoid overwhelm. 3. **Encourage Physical Activity:** Sports and physical activities can improve concentration and reduce hyperactivity. 4. **Communicate with Educators:** Work together to ensure the learner's needs are met both academically and in extracurricular settings. 5. **Foster Interests:** Allow the learner to choose activities they are passionate about, which can enhance their engagement and motivation. By striking the right balance, we can help learners with ADHD thrive in all areas of their lives. Let’s continue to support and empower them to achieve their full potential. #ADHD #Education #ExtracurricularActivities #StudentSuccess #Balance #TuesdayThoughts #educator #personalizedlearning --- Miss Mwangi

Beautifully written article on the state of affairs when it comes to education and college admissions...you have so aptly said "Qualities like kindness, politeness and empathy, that any exam or certification can not quantify". Indeed these are the qualities what employers look for in prospective candidates...because while technical and business skills can be easily taught...it's very difficult to teach someone humbleness and empathy. Keep writing such amazing articles.
