Studies show at least 16% of the American population are #ENTREPRENEURS! That roughly adds up to about 31 million Americans who are starting or have started their own businesses. Speaking from personal experience, entrepreneurs are unlikely to be working in public service or in roles that would help them qualify for loan forgiveness. While some of us have been working and paying back our loans, many of us have been unsuccessful at making significant progress toward repayment. Many more borrowers who can afford to pay their loans back, have simply given up repayment altogether as a result of wordy, complex, and half-baked programs that don't go far enough or don't address all the issues affecting borrowers. We need a simple, effective solutions for borrowers who are or have been making good faith efforts to repay their student loan debt and our government should NOT be profiteering off the backs of American student borrowers.: Watch the final segment of my 3-minute commentary here: https://lnkd.in/eupt7E2H Stay tuned for the final round of sessions on Dec. 11 and 12! #studentloan #studentloans #predatorylending #studentdebt #studentloanreform #debtfreejourney #financialfreedom #bipartisan #passthestudentloaninteresteliminationact

I've had the same conversation many times with people who create or distribute job descriptions. It takes three questions and less than two minutes. Question #1 - If you find a candidate to be obviously outstanding, proves she can do the work you need done and would clearly be an asset to your company, do you care how she became that way? 100% of the time, the answer is “well, no, if those things are obvious then I wouldn't care.” Question #2 - Ok, then why do you list a college degree as a requirement? The answer almost always starts with “well, a college degree is a signal that a person achieved a hard milestone and has knowledge specific to the work we need done.” I almost always get some version of that kind of response, which leads to the 3rd and final question. Question #3 - Right, I agree that a college degree is 'a' signal a person has those traits, but if we agree it isn’t the ‘only’ signal, then why make it a requirement? Conversation over. It's fine to require a great attitude, polished portfolio showcasing the work you need done and high emotional intelligence. But why would you ever insist someone take a singular - and insanely expensive - path to becoming that way? Makes. Zero. Sense.

Hot take: employers that require degrees are complicit in the student debt crisis.
