🌾Romanian Agriculture: Challenges and Solutions for a Sustainable Future 📚The first series of debates of the 24TRENDSFOR2024 Forum organized by DIGI24 and CONAF took place last week. The event included identifying issues, proposing solutions, and is followed by the initiation of legislative initiatives aimed to support Romanian society on its path towards development in the five debated fields: 🔋ENERGY 🌾AGRICULTURE 🏥HEALTH ♻️CIRCULAR ECONOMY 💰 FINANCING Romania is the fifth agricultural power in the European Union, yet 1️⃣ din 1️⃣ 0️⃣ children still does not have enough food and goes to bed hungry. Processing materials, investing in irrigation infrastructure, and implementing educational and training programs for farmers about new agricultural technologies were just a few of the issues raised during the debate on Tuesday, May 28. One of the major challenges for Romanian agriculture is also the use of European funds. Transforming numbers into well-being and statistics into real conditions is a path that sustainable development must follow, that of predictability. A discussion full of problems and challenges. However, in the end, the debate facilitated the identification of concrete solutions that will contribute to sustainable and high-performing agriculture in Romania, and it was established that a working group with all key stakeholders in the field will be created to improve the strategy and outlook. 🎙️The Forum will host two more series of debates around the importance of sustainable development of fundamental cores in the months of September and November. We will bring together again representatives of public authorities, multinational companies, entrepreneurs, and the interested public who will have the opportunity to participate in the most extensive project broadcasted on a large scale, initiated for the first time by a non-governmental organization together with a media channel with European coverage. #Romania #24trendsfor2024 #DIGI24 #CONAF

Iona Thomas hosted positive discussions between AgriZeroNZ and an Innovate UK delegation on how UK & New Zealand innovators can collaborate to accelerate new tools to reduce agricultural emissions. AgriZeroNZ is a world-first partnership between the New Zealand government and major agribusiness companies to rapidly reduce emissions, and the UK delegation gained the benefit of insight from this Kiwi organisation with a global perspective. #Agritech is a rapidly growing sector, and teams from both countries see the efficiency and profitability gains in commercialising new technologies for uptake on-farm. Agritech is one of 5 priority themes in the UK / NZ Science Work Programme, and the UK in New Zealand policy, trade, climate change and science teams have worked for many years in this important cooperation theme, so it's amazing to see promising UK / NZ collaborations start to scale. Looking forward to sharing new success stories in 2025! 📢 𝐔𝐩𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐫-𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 (𝐅𝐎𝐑𝐈) 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐦𝐞 Last week, during the Steering Committee of the #FORI Programme, both the European Commission & the Secretariat of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS) were pleased to observe that FORI is enhancing farmers’ learning through peer-to-peer experiences and knowledge sharing across the three #OACPS regions after two years of implementation. 🌱 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐌𝐢𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐮𝐝 from the 𝐄𝐔’𝐬 𝐃𝐆 𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐏𝐀 noted, “the uniqueness and complexity of FORI as a farmer-led action research is what makes this programme truly remarkable. As an action research initiative led by farmers themselves, FORI demonstrates how farmers can drive research and innovation in the agricultural sector.” 🌱 Both the European Commission & Secretariat of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS) underscored the importance to leverage FORI’s current results to shape #agroecological policies in the #OACPS region. OACPS, represented by Yvonne Chileshe, expressed enthusiasm about the synergies between FORI and #FO4ACP programmes. 🎯 Looking forward, the focus will be on capitalising on processes to inform policy dialogue, strengthening #collaboration and #communication, conducting regional #workshops, and disseminating success stories. 💶 Funded by the European Commission and the Secretariat of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS), FORI is managed by AgriCord and implemented through agri-agencies in collaboration with #farmer #organizations at continental, regional,national, subnational, and local levels. We developed conditions under which the supply chain will be vertically integrated or rely on various forms of contracting between farmers and agribusiness. We identified factors that lead to oligopolistic profits and assessed the role of credit, uncertainty, and dynamics. We demonstrate our findings with examples – the evolution of the cattle sector, water supply chain, flowers in Kenya, and others – and derive policy implications for developing a more resilient agri-food sector that is up to the challenges of climate change and food security.
