"Focus Daniel-son. Focus." At Scotland’s EV Charging Future event in Dundee yesterday, I (not Mr Miagi) proposed that councils would deliver the greatest benefit to their residents if they focused purely on the #evcharging challenge only they can solve. That is: creating a just transition to #electricvehicles by ensuring residents without driveways can also charge at home conveniently and at affordable tariffs. Focus also means knowing what you shouldn't do. I proposed that councils need not worry about providing more high power #evcharginginfrastructure, because as the market matures, the private sector will deliver that outcome without their involvement. For instance petrol stations are adding high power charge points to their forecourts. Supermarket chains are adding high power chargers to their parking lots. Here's another great example of that future coming true already: Osprey Charging Network installing large high power hubs on retail & leisure sites owned by Legal & General Investment Management (LGIM) ⚡The popularity of high power hubs⚡ These large hubs are what drivers want when charging away from home. Zapmap's Annual Charging Insights Report shows hubs are the fastest growth locations amongst EV drivers, while the popularity of smaller installations in car parks is falling. https://lnkd.in/e3N2nQfK Why? Confidence. When there are many charge points on a site, the chances you'll queue to charge or be stranded by a faulty charge point are minimal. The risk is a couple of charge points in a council car park will go from being a lifeline to white elephants as the mix of public charging infrastructure polarises to high power hubs and low power near-home charging. Scottish councils have done an amazing job creating a widespread public network of all types of charge points. But the past is not the future. As the EV market matures, council strategies should evolve too. 🔎 A BETTER FOCUS 🔎 The gap to fill is near-home charging. The new Near Home Charging Index metrics from Cenex show East Lothian Council has the best residential charging coverage in Scotland. 44.1% of its residents without driveways have a charge point within a 4 minute walk from home. Osprey 🤝 Legal & General Investment Management (LGIM), to deliver five ultra-rapid EV charging hubs. We’re pleased to announce that Osprey has been selected by Legal & General (L&G) to provide high-quality EV charging infrastructure at six of its premium retail and leisure locations, enhancing value for tenants and customers. The first location is live in Stoke-on-Trent, featuring four rapid chargers. The rest of the locations are ultra-rapid hubs, with two 16-charger ultra-rapid hubs already under construction in Waltham Abbey (Essex) and Watford. In total, the six sites comprise 72 ultra-rapid charge points, from the South East to the North West of England (read the press release for the locations!).
