Today, we celebrate the leaders who have shaped our nation and our democracy. We know not all of the past actions of our leaders have upheld our nation’s professed values of liberty and justice for all. And we believe in the importance of standing up for the marginalized and underrepresented, and fighting for everyone’s rights.
But we reject the idea that our society is irreversibly divided, or must become even more divided. We must come together as a country to build a more just and equitable future for all. We believe in a vision of America where everyone is respected, protected, and represented; regardless of their race, gender, sexuality, or socioeconomic status.
We might have different ideas of how to fight for justice. We might come from or live in different places or situations. But the determination that justice and equality are worth fighting for and must be our guiding principles should always unite us: as women, as citizens, as a country, as a society.
As we celebrate, it’s crucial to also note the continued absence of women in the highest office. In over 230 years, the United States has yet to have a female president. Women’s representation in government is a vital issue, with the U.S. lagging behind many other nations in women’s representation in national legislatures, even after recent progress. Having women in leadership positions brings diverse perspectives and priorities that benefit everyone. It’s time to break down the barriers preventing women from running and winning elections, ensuring our government reflects the diversity of our nation. Let’s honor our history today, and look forward to the day when we can proudly say, “Madam President.”
