The letter to presidents and chancellors today (March 15) from Secretary Cardona is insulting and includes a bunch of words that say nothing and add no value whatsoever. I like this part in particular: "Prepare for ISIRs: Based on some of the requests we received from schools earlier this week, we believe some schools are still not fully prepared to receive ISIRs. We recognize the compressed timelines have created challenges for you, your staff, financial aid administrators, students, and families. I urge you to continue to partner with us and utilize all the resources we have offered to facilitate a smooth 2024-2025 FAFSA process. It’s critical that your team is ready to receive student records and can begin putting together student aid packages as efficiently as possible." Is this serious? To imply that colleges are not ready to receive ISIRs and that's the reason for the delay is the ultimate gaslighting. How insulting to all of us!!! Get your hand on the secretary's letter. What a joke. This is infuriating. And, don't you know that the Ed Department will send a trickle of ISIRs over the weekend and then tell us (and those who are doing a really poor job of oversight) that they fulfilled their responsibility and met their deadline. It all kind of smells like opening the #FAFSA for 30 seconds on a couple of days before January 1 to claim victory. Also, where the hell is James Kvaal? #fafsfiasco #emchat #FAFSA #FAFSAsimplifcation #highered #highereducation #admissions #collegeadmissions #collegeadmission #financialaid

The recent unveiling of the FAFSA simplification measures by the Department of Education aimed to streamline the financial aid process and alleviate barriers to college enrollment. However, the current outcomes, evident in Iowa as mentioned in the article, underscores a concerning trend. The significant drop in FAFSA submissions for fall 2024 compared to the previous years signals a setback rather than progress in accessibility to higher education, especially for rural and underserved populations. The stark decline in FAFSA submissions, as illustrated by data from Valley, Waukee, Pleasant Valley, and Davenport Central High Schools in Iowa is alarming. Such reductions highlight the far-reaching impact of this issue. This downward trend not only reflects a failure to achieve the intended of FAFSA simplification but also raises concerns about its adverse effects on college access. It is imperative for policymakers to acknowledge and address these challenges promptly.

On Friday, February 2, The Department of Education finally provided details about FAFSA submissions. Today's version is for the State of Iowa, where I live. I hope public policy makers, like Senators Grassley and Ernst, Rep. Miller-Meeks and Governor Reynolds are paying attention. For fall 2023, 16,521 students from Iowa had submitted the FAFSA by this same time; for the fall of 2024, only 7,979 students have submitted the FAFSA. That's a darn good gap and another example of how this mess is impacting rural and undeserved areas of the country. Here are three good examples from high schools in Iowa: Valley High School: Fall 2023 319 Fall 2024 133 Waukee High School: Fall 2023 248 Fall 2024 119 Pleasant Valley High School Fall 2023 204 Fall 2024 94 Davenport Central High School (I have a daughter who is a junior) Fall 2023 122 Fall 2024 45 Overall, fewer than 1/2 of the students from IA have submitted the FAFSA in comparison to the same time last year. #emchat #FAFSA #FAFSASimplification #departmentofeducation #highered #highereducation #admissions #collegeadmissions
