Here’s the reality: NATO stands united against threats. It is a defensive alliance committed to keeping allies and allied territories safe. #1NATO75years #NATOsummit
We live in dangerous times and NATO needs to stand firm as a bastion against Russian aggression. But that means a strong, capable, determined NATO that shows by word and deed that it is united and prepared to act as a unified bloc against Putin’s aggression. All NATO nations need to step up to the plate. In the past, the alliance has been plagued by the too-liberal use of National Caveats, which allow troop contributing nations to limit their involvement in operations. Historically, this has left a small core to do the heavy lifting (those activities with the highest costs in blood and treasure) while others restrict their contributions to the less risky peace-keeping tasks. In the face of Russian aggression the use of National Caveats makes the alliance look weak and disjointed. The final communique from Washington should include a “cast iron” commitment that the caveats system will be discontinued for as long as Putin poses a threat.
Breaking the agreement to refrain from NATO expansion to the East, has without doubt been a consideration for Russian actions. EU expansion has also been a contribution in my view.
