Are you aware of the ever-expanding opportunities for collaborative U.S.-Israeli scientific research through the NSF/BSF partnership? Established in 2012, this initiative, distinct from the regular BSF Research Grants, has evolved into joint programs with virtually every National Science Foundation (NSF) grant-making directorate. It stands as a model of cross-border scientific collaboration, marking the most extensive cooperative agreement between the NSF and any other country. For U.S. scientists, financial support seamlessly integrates into NSF's regular activities, eliminating the need for separate budget allocations. Israeli scientists receive support from the Planning and Budgeting Committee (PBC) of The Council for Higher Education (CHE) - (המועצה להשכלה גבוהה (מל"ג, exclusively designated for the NSF-BSF programs. We encourage eligible scientists from both countries to explore this unique opportunity to join intellectual forces, bringing together diverse expertise to tackle some of our most stubborn and complex scientific questions - collaboratively. Most deadlines are open all year or have various submission dates depending on the area. Upcoming deadlines for joint NSF/BSF programs include: 🔹NSF-BSF Science of Learning and Augmented Intelligence NSF Deadline: Feb. 14, 2024 BSF Deadline: Feb. 20, 2024 🔹NSF-BSF EDGE IOS NSF Deadline: Feb. 15, 2024 BSF Deadline: Feb. 21, 2024 🔹NSF-BSF Chemical Oceanography and Physical Oceanography NSF Deadline: Feb. 15, 2024 BSF Deadline: Feb. 21, 2024 🔹NSF-BSF Collaborative Research in Computational Neuroscience (CRCNS) NSF Deadline: March 7, 2024 BSF Deadline: March 13, 2024 Please refer to the BSF website for details: https://lnkd.in/e-qVuwTm #BSFfunding #NSF_BSF #partnership #US_Israel #collaboration #scienceresearch #researchfunding #scientificexcellence

In 2016, I submitted to the DFG an 11-page proposal that had a very high impact on my scientific career. The grant included approximately 1.3 million €, allowing me to fund four PhD students as well as acquire scientific equipment. Today I am submitting a 12-page report, summarizing the most relevant results we obtained. We really learned a lot regarding the fabrication of multi-functional surfaces. In total, we were able to publish 26 peer-reviewed journal papers, 28 proceedings papers, and we presented our results at different national and international conferences with 78 contributions. Without exaggerating, the Reinhart-Koselleck (*) program of the DFG is the best funding instrument I have seen in my scientific career. Why? Because you get total freedom for research, because there are only two reports you have to present (each with 12 pages) and because you have time to focus on the work you have to do and not on administrative issues. In other words, I felt that the DFG trusted me to do the work I had to do. We need more similar programs in Germany as well as in the EU. We need to have time to focus on new innovations that will drive industry to success. It is insane the amount of time we use for writing never-ending reports and forms that nobody will read. If we manage to change (a little) Germany's scientific system to make it less complex and bureaucratic, we will see an explosion in productivity. This will increase the position of our universities in international rankings, enable us to offer better courses to our students, and drive greater innovation. Just because we will get more time for the things that are really important. We do not need more founding, just to use it more efficiently. Thanks to all PhD and undergraduate students that participated in this project! Felix Bouchard, Sascha Teutoburg-Weiss, Mikhael El-Khoury, Stephan Milles, Rafael Kern, Juan Britos, Yuqi Li, Leonard Günther, Johannes Dahms, Franz Keller, Mario Goltz, Cecilia Mulone, Christoph Fischer, Yasmin Bouraoui, and Franziska Spitz. (*) Reinhart Koselleck (23 April 1923 – 3 February 2006) was a German historian. He is widely considered to be one of the most important historians of the 20th century. Freelance Grant Writer and Project Manager (Horizon Europe) / More than €125 millions secured for my clients and employers over the last 15 years / To The Point founder
New Perspectives for MSCA Doctoral Networks – Key Reflections and Statistics from the 2023 Call The European Commission has recently released the statistics for the 2023 call for MSCA Doctoral Networks, revealing an increasingly competitive landscape. With 1,066 proposals submitted, we notice a significant increase from the previous year (+120 proposals). 🔍 Highlights: - 72% of the proposals scored above 80/100, a significant increase from 66% in 2022 and 62% in 2021 - In all panels, a minimum score of 95/100 was necessary to secure funding, demonstrating the need for flawless excellence. - With over 600 proposals scoring between 80 and 95 ready to be resubmitted next year, preparing an impeccable proposal is more crucial than ever. 💭 Reflection: This year, I had the privilege of collaborating with a French engineering school which, on its second attempt, secured funding with a score of 99.4. Last year the proposal was awarded “only” 83.8 points but we managed to improved it especially in the excellence section, which earns a lot of points thanks to its high coefficient, and by adding a number of industrial partners, thereby strengthening the career prospects of future PhD students. A few years ago, I worked on a project that went from 78 to 96, so it's quite possible to make a big leap to obtain financing Conclusion: The MSCA Doctoral Networks call remains highly competitive. Standing out requires meticulous preparation and a precise response to all of the Commission's requirements – even the most subtle ones.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗽𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗘𝗥𝗖 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗲 The prestigious and highly competitive European Research Council (ERC) grants are often seen as the holy grail for researchers looking to fund groundbreaking projects. 👉 However, ERC grants are not the only path to research excellence. ERC grants are extremely difficult to obtain. Early career researchers may feel immense pressure to secure these grants, seeing them as make-or-break for their careers. However, this singular focus can be detrimental. Not everyone is suited for ERC grants. The projects require novel, transformative ideas that significantly advance the field. Applicants need an established track record and international reputation. Solely chasing ERC funding can also lead researchers to pursue trendy ideas not aligned with their strengths and passions. They may continuously tweak proposals to match changing priorities, wasting valuable time. Such researchers risk spreading themselves too thin trying to check all the ERC boxes. The path to research excellence does not rely on ERC grants alone. While prestigious, they are just one funding instrument among many, including national and foundation grants. Early career researchers should thoughtfully evaluate which opportunities best fit their experience level, skills, and research vision. ⚠️ Rather than twisting their science to fit rigid ERC criteria, you can gain expertise and reputation through diverse funding sources. Excellence emerges from focusing on your unique skills and pursuing research you’re truly passionate about, not just what’s trendy. ERC grants may come later as the crowning achievement of a body of work. But they are not required to do outstanding science. Be open to the multitude of paths to impactful research.

So important to the future of Ukraine to keep its scientific potential alive.
STCU is a proud partner of the EURIZON Consortium, which is implementing the EURIZON Fellowship Program, “Remote Research Grants for Ukrainian Researchers.” European Union-funded EURIZON supports scientific and technical collaboration in developing research infrastructure, focusing on coordination and support for Ukrainian scientists and their research and strengthening research in all of Europe. EURIZON is the second phase of the four-year Horizon 2020 project initiated in February 2020. After Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, the project was faced with a force majeure as 10 project participants were based in Russia. The project was reorganized and transformed into EURIZON. The EURIZON Fellowship Program is dedicated to supporting Ukrainian researchers whose work is hindered or prevented by Russia´s war against Ukraine. The Program, through competitive grant funding, supports teams of researchers, including doctoral students, engineers, and technicians from Ukrainian institutes in all areas of science. The research projects have a duration of six to 12 months with teams of two to five members. More than 750 applications were submitted to the STCU during 2023, and today, February 1, 2024, 18 project teams, consisting of 130 Ukrainian doctoral students, engineers, and technicians will start their research fellowships. STCU will continue providing updates on the EURIZON Fellowship Program as it progresses, so please stay tuned for more information. The EURIZON Fellowship Secretariat and the European Commission now have 4.5 million euros available for funding research projects under this initiative.
