In 2018, Wellcome launched a call to fund PhD training programmes. Not unusual in itself, except for the prominence given to research culture as a selection criterion, on a par with scientific excellence. Also unusual was the degree of reflection exercised in developing and implementing the call. In this Open Letter, I describe the outcome of two studies reflecting on how the call was shaped, how it was responded to by applicants, and by evaluators. The Open Letter is a summary of the main cross-cutting themes; links to the full reports are embedded in it. As the profile of research culture is raised by an increasing number of funders, not least UKRI and the REF, there are many lessons to learn from this experiment in enhancing research culture. https://lnkd.in/e_Nq8Y-F

We are glad to inform you that the European Commission published the indicative calendar of calls for proposals supported by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) in 2024. The call dates and budget are tentative and will be confirmed and published on the EU’s Funding and Tender Opportunities Portal once the revised Horizon Europe 2023-2025 work programme is adopted in spring. This year, the MSCA will provide organisations with over €1.23 billion to support researchers from all over the world, at all stages of their career and in all disciplines. The funding will also benefit institutions by supporting excellent doctoral and postdoctoral programmes as well as collaborative research and innovation projects. The original budget foreseen in the current 2023-2024 Work Programme has been revised upwards, to take account of the UK’s contribution following its association to Horizon Europe as from 1st January this year. UK organisations will therefore be eligible to fully take part in MSCA 2024 calls. More details have been announced of the new doctoral funding and training which will be available this year. In 2024, UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) will commit more than £500m to support doctoral students through new awards. This means all UKRI-funded doctoral training will be delivered through two types of awards. These new focal and landscape awards replace the nine different schemes which currently support doctoral training. The UKRI website explains how focal awards "will provide support for areas that require a concentration of studentships in combination with a highly tailored training programme”. While landscape awards “will support the UK’s overall doctoral capability and capacity needs” and "bring together a number of doctoral training schemes helping to simplify and harmonise our doctoral offer”. Further details of funding opportunities will soon be released by the following organisations: - Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) - Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) - Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) - Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) - Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) For more details, visit the UK Research and Innovation website 👇 https://lnkd.in/gzNRpgTs
