SATURDAY AM EARLY: IF is looking at $30.5M opening this weekend after a $10M Friday + previews, at 4,041 theaters and while that might scream lower than expected on the surface since it’s below its $40M projections, triple note, it’s a PG-rated live-action film. There’s a reason why they haven’t been greenlit in a while, and let’s not slam Paramount and John Krasinsksi for swinging for the fences on original content. Here’s the upside: with an A CinemaScore, this family movie is bound to leg out and fill a niche in the summer despite 50% Rotten reviews. That’s just what family movies do. Rotten Tomatoes audience score is 85% fresh. At that starting point, IF‘s opening is just north of Ryan Reynold’s Free Guy ($28.3M), a previous piece of original IP for the actor. That PG-13 movie cleared $121.6M back in the late summer/early fall of 2021.

The path to meaningful content distribution is especially tricky, and producers are rethinking traditional models. Kudos to Dances with Films for presenting a first rate film sales and distribution panel with industry leaders Sejin Croninger (Paramount), Brian O'Shea (The Exchange), and Bill Vergos (Freestyle Digital), hosted by Jon Fitzgerald (Cause Cinema). Participating with my industry colleagues, we discussed customized, alternate approaches to sales and distribution in the emerging marketplace. While change takes time, we recognized reasons to be optimistic. Lewis Brisbois #independentfilm #filmfestivals #filmproduction #entertainmentlaw #filmlaw

DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE secured $38.5 million from domestic previews on Thursday, the biggest ever for an R-rated film and the 8th largest in history -- just behind AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR's $39 million. The Marvel Studios event crossover film from The Walt Disney Company remains set to slash its way to the biggest box office opening in history for an R-rated pic and represents a highly optimistic turning point for the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film is now estimated to earn at least $175-180 million, with growing potential to reach $200 million or more by weekend's end. Thanks as always to Sarah Whitten for including some of my thoughts in her latest for CNBC. Of course, “Deadpool & Wolverine” is also an important release for the overall Marvel Cinematic Universe. Disney has “eased off the gas pedal” and planned fewer releases in the series that drove the global box office for more than a decade, said Shawn Robbins, founder and owner of Box Office Theory. He said Disney is trying to right the ship after a series of theatrical missteps and poor box office hauls, as well as a deluge of streaming content that overcrowded the market and overwhelmed even the MCU’s biggest fans. “Ultimately, as much as this is a Marvel movie, it may be viewed equally as a midsummer action comedy that stars personalities and brands that die-hard fans and casual viewers love,” said Robbins. “Reynolds and Jackman are a grand slam duo given their respective pop culture presences and friendly back-and-forth across social media and interviews. There’s also a genuine curiosity about how the MCU’s first R-rated film will play out and hold to the qualities which made the first two Deadpool films and [Jackman’s 2017 Wolverine film] ‘Logan’ so popular.” Box Office Theory Paul Dergarabedian #DeadpoolAndWolverine #Disney #Marvel #MCU #Deadpool #Wolverine #BoxOffice #movies #cinema #theaters #film #entertainment #trending #trendingnews #trendingtopic #trendingonlinkedin

Studios and exhibitors are horribly unaware of how bad the economy is. Lets be very clear, inflation has caused a recession. In times like these entertainment is the first thing to go in a budget. Whether it’s going to the actual movie theater, or canceling streaming subscriptions. Entertainment is unfortunately the collateral damage in an economic downturn. #film #economy #business #recession
FRIDAY AFTERNOON: Ouch, it’s looking really bad. Warner Bros.’ Furiosa is possibly posting the lowest opening for a Memorial Day movie in 41 years with a 4-day between $31M-$35M. How the holy heck is that? If the George Miller-directed prequel comes in on the low end, the last time a No. 1 movie or Memorial […]
