A new film complex has been announced in Stirling that is planned to be one of the largest in Scotland. Stirling Council said the campus, located on former MOD land at Forthside, could create more than 4,000 jobs over the next 25 years. The site is being redeveloped with part of a £19m UK government grant to the local authority to regenerate Forthside. It is hoped that major productions for Netflix and Amazon will use the site. The land has been transferred to the council through the Stirling and Clackmannanshire City Region Deal. The site has already been used as a filming location, but there is currently no timescale when the new studio complex will open. Existing buildings on the site will be retained and refurbished. A recent Screen Scotland report showed a doubling of domestic film and high-end TV production between 2019 and 2021. Paywalled, but this Globe piece by Barry Hertz perfectly articulates Toronto's current cultural crisis. Here's the lede: "If it feels like Toronto culture is under relentless attack, that’s because it is. But there are different battlegrounds, different fights, and different opponents, making a united defence all the more challenging to mount. And if we want to continue living in a city that values art, imagination and the kind of transformative experiences that change lives – a once inalienable notion that has become more of a tremulous assumption over the past few years – then Toronto, and ultimately every Canadian urban centre, is facing a crisis point. Over the past two months alone, Torontonians have lost access to a frighteningly wide range of cultural institutions: the Ontario Science Centre, the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema, and, unless a solution can be found over the long weekend, the Revue Cinema, the city’s oldest operating movie house." Thankfully, within the last 24 hours, the non-profit that runs the Revue Cinema has won a court injunction to stay open past July 1st, but the shock news of its imminent closure - and the seemingly intractable power of its nonagenarian landlord - on the heels of the sudden closing of the Science Centre, and the news about the Phoenix not long before that - really elucidated Toronto's collective grief at the loss of our cultural spaces, and the precarity of the organizations we have left. https://lnkd.in/grn97sgi

Delighted to be in Gateshead for today’s announcements. Warner Bros. Discovery welcomes the first step of the Government's Sector Plan and renewed support for the creative industries announced today, as well as joins with government and partners to support growth and investment across the industry in the U.K. We are particularly pleased to see the active steps the government is taking to deliver a more flexible and bespoke Growth and Skills Levy suited to the creative industry’s needs. Addressing hiring gaps in the market by focusing on skills and increasing opportunity for all are key priorities for Warner Bros. Discovery in the U.K, currently supported through our significant investment in our below the line skills and training centre at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, CrewHQ, and our talent development programme for underrepresented creatives across the nations and regions, WBD Access.
