As an HR professional, I have the privilege of witnessing the growth and development of individuals during their internships. A young intern approached me with a small gift – a chocolate. Initially, I was perplexed, but what followed left me deeply moved. She explained, "Ma'am, this was my first internship ever, and I just wanted to express my gratitude for the opportunity you've given me." It was a moment that struck a chord within me. After my summer internship, it's been a week since I returned to campus for another exciting year of learning. It's been wonderful hearing all the exciting stories from friends who interned at various companies. One evening, we had a deep conversation about company culture and guidance, which brought our HR lessons to life. During our chat, my friend who interned in sales mentioned, "I felt more like a salesgirl than an MBA intern from a BSchool. They even made us sit apart to avoid talking." I asked, "How did that impact you?" She replied, "It was demotivating and isolating." This got me thinking about the countless hours spent in HR classes discussing organizational culture and its impact on employees Discussing this with our HR faculty, I realized such practices aim to improve focus but can negatively impact employee morale. A positive workplace culture is crucial, as we spend most of our time there and form important connections. At my internship, I had the freedom to engage with everyone, regardless of their role. I spoke to many people with over 10 years of experience, and each week, someone celebrated work anniversaries like 6/7 years at the company. It was evident that people stay where they are valued and respected. 🌟 Meet Bethany Lew, our #DiscoverMHA intern! 🌟 Bethany has taken on the role of a Civilian Generalist, working on projects that support Career Transition (CT) for retiring Home Team uniformed officers. From engaging stakeholders and reviewing CT programmes to curating communication materials and exploring data visualisation and automation tools, her journey has been nothing short of inspiring! 👏💯 Here's what Bethany has to share about her 6-month internship with us! ------------------------------- When I first applied for the #DiscoverMHA Internship, I did not know what to expect. What even is a Civilian Generalist? How can one’s job be generalised and not specialised? I was assigned to a project that focuses on Career Transition (CT) – helping retiring uniformed officers to upskill and sufficiently prepare themselves for a second career outside of the force, as they have an earlier retirement age than their civilian counterparts. I started off with looking through CT policies, interacting with various stakeholders from the various Home Team Departments and seeing how the policies could be better refined. Then, I was tasked with sourcing for relevant upskilling courses to be recommended to officers, before my work pivoted to curating communication materials to advertise our workshops to them. Now, I am dabbling in tools such as Tableau and UiPath, to make our work more efficient! Amongst all the work that I’ve done, the most memorable experience was interacting with the retiring uniformed officers when we invited them to our workshops. They were so eager and earnest in their upskilling efforts, giving constructive feedback on our initiatives. The policies we work on have a real-life impact on them, and even the slightest change could make their lives so much better! Besides the broad range of work I’ve been exposed to, another thing that has resonated with me is how incredible the work-life balance is here at MHA Headquarters (MHQ). Besides the flexi work arrangements, there are so many events that are organised to upkeep the well-being of officers at MHQ. From Coffee Connects, where food is catered and officers come down to network with their colleagues, to movie screenings. The range of activities is mind-blowing. I once attended a Positive Psychology workshop organised by the Home Team Psychologists, and there was a segment where we all sat there and meditated! As I look back on my time here, I realised that my perspective on MHA has vastly broadened. From the groundwork of the 10 Home Team agencies, to the office work of the 14 MHQ Divisions, there is really something for everyone in MHA. Thank you, MHA, for letting me intern with you! ❤

After completing a 6-month summer internship as an Assistant Store Manager at Blinkit —yes, one of the largest e-grocery companies in India—I’m excited to say that I’ve been promoted to Store Manager! 🚀 During my #internship, I didn’t just learn the ropes; I immersed myself in the nitty-gritty of store operations. I had the chance to develop, implement, and monitor standardized processes that made our #expressstores run like a well-oiled machine. But it wasn’t just about efficiency—I dug deep to identify areas for improvement, driving initiatives that not only boosted productivity but also elevated our entire operational game. One thing I quickly realized is that communication is key. I made it a priority to bridge the gap between central and store-level #teams, addressing challenges head-on and optimizing performance across the board. And the best part? Seeing those improvements reflected in our #KPIs and knowing that my efforts contributed to real, tangible results. But let me tell you, this journey was far from a solo endeavor. Every insight, every recommendation I provided to senior management was backed by data, collaboration, and a relentless drive to make things better. And that’s what led to my promotion—turning an internship into a full-time, fulfilling career.
