The primary role of a systems engineer is to de-risk the answers to 'Are we building the right thing?' and 'Are we building the thing right?'. These questions should be addressed intelligently using a risk-based approach. Too many SE's I've encountered get too excited by MBSE (Lets have a modelling team!), using their tools (SysML!) or focus on things that fundamentally do not help the project. An SE works with the other functions (engineering, financial, project etc) to improve the chance of a successful project outcome. It can be a bloody thankless task as we work cross the development stovepipes so are often the ones to find issues with the solutions (which are cheaper fixed when earlier found) and get the blame for finding them!
