At one point, we were approached by clients from England – a high-ranking Russian-speaking family. They needed an assistant with a very specific set of requirements – we had dealt with similar requests before, but the combination of options this time was extremely challenging. So, here it is: ✅ Dual citizenship, to easily move around the world ✅ Education from world-class universities ✅ Experience in the luxury segment This is tough, but we do have such candidates. However, the main point was ✅ Height of at least 185 cm (6’1”) 🤷🏼♀️ The salary offered was $10,000, with all travel, accommodation, and other expenses covered by the employer. There are some people who find it difficult to keep to time. You ask them to be at a certain place at a certain time, you can expect them to be 10, 15, 20mins to even an hour late. It is a bad habit! In Africa we have a saying 'African time', which translates to 'late'. If you are going to be successful in life, this is something you need to train yourself in. Think about it: How many jobs, how many opportunities, how many special moments have you missed because you were 'running late'? Learn to be on time. The best way to do this is to prepare in advance. Here are some tips: 💯Plan the trip (how long will it take to get there). Make sure to account for things like traffic (you can add 15-20mins to you traveling time) 💯Plan your attire (what you will wear) and get it ready the day/night before 💯Plan your breakfast or meal if you need to eat before you leave 💯Avoid distractions like your cellphone while you are getting ready. 💯Wake up early (set an alarm if you must)! Time is something you can never get back once it is gone. Dear LinkedIn contacts, In a couple of months, I will be permanently in Finland, in Helsinki, finishing my beloved experience at Ostelzzz in Milan. I am looking for a job mainly as a receptionist, although, since I do not speak Finnish, I am open to other experiences. Most hotels and hostels are not looking for reception staff, which is understandable, that is why I send spontaneous applications. How do I expect them to work? Most likely, they will not need me (sadly), but when a staff member resigns, or goes on maternity or paternity leave, or any dynamic leads to a vacancy, my name, my resume, and my cover letter will be in a virtual pile of possible candidates for the new vacancy. For this reason, and you can imagine because I am sure you have been there too, I have sent and am sending many applications. I don't send them randomly; I first look for open positions and where possible, I apply canonically. Alternatively, I send my spontaneous application to the human resources department of the various hotels. When that department is not disclosed anywhere, I send an email to the classic info@hotelname.com that I find on the internet, kindly asking, since I assume that that is not the right email, to forward the email in question to the boss or HR of the case. Sometimes, one of the messages I receive (and, don't get me wrong, I appreciate the kindness – in Italy, I would most likely not have even received a response) is a link to the open positions on the hotel website, which I had obviously already consulted, and where there is no open position for me. ...but it is precisely for that reason that I sent a spontaneous application. The world of job hunting is like a game of darts, but sometimes it seems that instead of darts, there are carrots. Boiled. Falling on the ground. You will excuse my informality, my friends on LinkedIn. I know that this platform is often used to boast about one's progress, but I think it is also honest to report the grayest moments. Even the light gray ones, permeated with hope. Now you know, folks of the Helsinki hotels, that if you need a receptionist, I know how to do my job and I also know how to boil carrots. 🤷♀️You're Kidding Me, Is That Really What You're Called?🤷♀️ The Importance of Job Title Clarity. Ever come across a CV with job titles that seem a bit out of the ordinary? The Scotford Fennessy Corporate and Administration Support Recruitment team does, every day. From "Director of First Impressions" for a Receptionist to "Lifestyle Manager" for a Personal Assistant, creative role titles on CVs can make a big difference. But is this a positive or a negative? I'm dealing with a brilliant candidate at present, who aligns so well to being a "Project Coordinator" or "Project Advisor" in her next role, however her two most aligned roles to this on her CV were titled "Service Desk Officer" which could almost be mistaken for her being a Receptionist (she certainly wasn't according to her duties) and "Systems Assurance Advisor" which is very unlikely to help her appear Boolean Search wise when she applies for a "Project Advisor" or "Project Coordinator" role. In a heavy CV applicant environment like we work in, where you could be one of hundreds of applicants, truth is you get about an initial five-second glance by a recruiter over who progresses to next stage.
