“A record number of overseas buyers attended China’s biggest trade fair, which concluded Sunday, though the value of their orders remained well below the all-time high. A total of 246,000 foreign buyers showed up for the spring session of the biannual Canton Fair, up 24.5% from last year’s autumn session, official figures show. The value of the orders they placed rose 10.7% to $24.7 billion. Established in 1957 in the southern metropolis Guangzhou, the Canton Fair makes a major contribution to China’s exports, and so is widely considered a barometer for the country’s foreign trade. The event has long attracted buyers from more than 200 countries and regions. This year’s attendance was up 17% from the previous record high of nearly 210,000 reached in the spring session of 2012.” “The total value of their orders, however, was still 35% off the $37.9 billion high set during the autumn session of 2011. Structural changes in China’s exports were the main reason why the record attendance didn’t translate into record orders at this year’s spring session, which started April 15, several vendors told Caixin at the event. The percentage of buyers from Europe and the U.S., who tend to make larger purchases at high per-unit prices, declined in recent years. Buyers from countries involved in China’s Belt and Road Initiative filled the gap in attendance, but not in order value because in general they made smaller purchases, the vendors said. Official numbers reflect this change, with 160,000 buyers attending from Belt and Road partner countries.” “They accounted for 65% of the total at the spring session. Buyers from Europe and the U.S. accounted for 20% of the total. Orders placed through the online platform, an add-on channel initiated after the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, jumped 33% from last year’s autumn session to $3 billion, bringing the total value of deals made at the spring session to $27.7 billion. Multiple merchants at the event said that more conventional foreign trade companies based in China sped up their online transition in the wake of the pandemic. A growing number of overseas buyers have also been reducing their reliance on the Canton Fair for purchases. This is particularly true of those from places with well-developed internet infrastructure, the merchants told Caixin.”

How much is this blue file worth? How much does 5 days and 102 leads from INTERNATIONALE EISENWARENMESSE cost the Pilana Metal owners? In money it’s roughly 16 thousand EUR 💶 Will it pay back? About 2/3 of the leads are very good, out of that about 1/3 is just excellent. Even with 10% score rate I’m confident the investment will return soon and will keep on bringing profit long term. 🍮🍻and 🤝with folks from all over the 🌍 is just a priceless bonus.. What do you think: do trade fairs still make sense or will e-commerce do the trick?

🌍 The first phase of the 136th China Import and Export Fair (Canton Fair) concluded on Saturday in Guangzhou, highlighting the growing international demand for China's high-tech and high value-added products. Organizers reported a surge in overseas interest, particularly in digitalized, intelligent, and green products, which have emerged as major highlights. Over 11,165 companies participated, with about 3,600 specializing in digital technology and intelligent manufacturing. These companies, embracing transformations through big data, AI, and the industrial internet, showcased over 390,000 digital products—a 300% increase from the previous session 🚀. Exhibits ranged from smart home appliances and industrial automation equipment to humanoid robots and hydrogen-powered bikes, underscoring China's shift toward high-end manufacturing. More than 130,000 overseas buyers attended, with 69.7% from Belt and Road countries. The Middle East and Southeast Asia saw significant buyer growth 📈. As China prioritizes high-quality development and opening up, the second phase of the fair (household items, gifts, building materials, furniture) runs Wednesday to Sunday. 🤝 Don’t miss the chance to visit Sellers Union Group at the Canton Fair and explore exciting partnership opportunities! #sellersuniongroup #esg #foreigntrade #business #product #supplychains #sustainablebusiness #cantonfair

I think it is more nuanced than this - there are still pockets of companies from Europe and North America, but perhaps spread across different categories and not your average whole/retail type firm. Many buyers from mature economies are more established now, with their own teams or partners on the ground, who tend to skip Canton Fair. A lot of new buyers might be based globally but selling on amazon in US and European markets. That said - there is indeed a surge of interest from developing countries. Canton Fair feels markedly busier than 2023, but vendors will have to be more savvy to get good customers. #supplychain #cantonfair #china https://lnkd.in/gaBaVMJW

The first recorded trade fair - 1150 AD No prizes for guessing that the first documented trade fair took place in Frankfurt, and 800 years later, the city remains one of the most popular destinations for trade fairs in the world. These early trade fairs focused on agricultural products and wine, which, I like to think, have now evolved into the many food & wine markets of europe. Disclaimer: although this may be the first officially documented trade fair, bazzars and barter markets have existed throughout all of history to facilitate trade, for example along the silk/ spice route. Do you think Oktoberfest would count as a Trade Fair and therefore a business expense?
