Today is National Women's Equality Day -- the day that commemorates the 1920 certification of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, granting women the right to vote. ULI member Jen Ruby recently shared this special photo of she and her daughter voting for the first time -- that's what it's all about! . . . . #nationalwomensequalityday #vote

International Women's Day (March 8) is a global UN observation event. By the early 1900s, women were having voting rights in several countries. It has been a prolonged struggle to get voting rights in a celebrated democracy like the US. From the beginning, the universal adult franchise adopted by India gave voting rights to all adults, including women. The historic bill of giving 33% of the seats to women was one of the bills passed when parliament started functioning from its new premises. Even though many agree that women in leadership roles bring equity and compassion in addition to efficiency and help societies become more just, the number of women occupying leadership positions is less than 30%. What we need is to celebrate women for what they are. Take action for equality. Let it begin with you, at your home, workplace and the society in which you live. 102 years ago, women were given the same voting rights as men in Ireland. This was a historic step towards equality and inclusion for women in Ireland. The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day is ‘Inspire Inclusion’. The IWD website states that “when we inspire others to understand and value women’s inclusion, we forge a better world.” To mark International Women’s Day this year, IOB asks all women to use their vote in today’s referendum while we, of course, express no view on how to cast that vote. When women vote, they become part of the decision-making process. Together we can continue to forge a more inclusive world for women. #IWD2024

We are agreed, as a global community, that women should be more actively involved in agenda-setting and decision-making in politics. But the road from poor representation to truly inclusive politics does not seem to exist beyond words. The question is: How do we change this? How do we prevail upon political parties to go beyond rhetoric to actually nominate and support more women candidates this year? #womeninpolitics #womensparticipation #IWD24

😈 DISILLUSIONED Many of us are understandably disillusioned with politics at the moment. Globally, we see increasing political polarisation, inadequate action on climate change, and growing economic inequality. In the UK, it’s no better with political turmoil, scandals, the cost-of-living crisis, and the aftermath of Brexit. 🤍 SUFFRAGETTES Today marks the anniversary of the Royal Assent of the Equal Franchise Act on 2nd July 1928, which granted equal voting rights to women over 21. This milestone was the result of decades of struggle, from the first women's suffrage petition in June 1866, the "Women's Sunday" rally in June 1908, to Emily Wilding Davison's dramatic protest at the Epsom Derby in June 1913. ✅ VOTE I have cast my postal vote in the UK election. Although I am also fed-up with our politicians, I believe it is important to vote. It allows me to play a role in shaping our future, set an example for The Firecracker (especially after our discussions following an assembly at school about the election), and honour the legacy of the suffragettes and other advocates for gender equality. 💜🤍💚 For the suffragette movement, purple symbolises dignity, white represents purity, and green stands for hope. ____ Read more about Women and The Vote, and of those who fought tirelessly to ensure that women's voices could be heard in the democratic process: https://lnkd.in/ekW9yAQC https://lnkd.in/eZ3Mu-eY _____ #VoteForEquality #WomensRights #UKElection #Suffragettes #EqualFranchiseAct #PoliticalEngagement #Democracy #WomenInSTEM #WomenInTech #YouCantBeWhatYouCantSee #BeEqual #GenderEquality #DEI
