Get to work, get to school, get to the grocery store (or have groceries get to us) — there's no end to the need for transportation in this country and the Sacramento region. While there's an abundance of options on how we get from Point A to Everywhere Else, access and opportunity can vary wildly depending on where you live. Today, Kacey Lizon (SACOG) and Kendra Macías Reed (Franklin Neighborhood Development Corporation) discuss the transportation-related benefits for neighborhoods that go beyond cars, trucks and bus lines. https://lnkd.in/gTBfQmxx

Springtime Sunday nights in McCarren Park. 🤡 It crushes and confounds me that Park House—an eatery, bar, and bathroom facility in McCarren—serves almost everything they sell in #SingleUsePlastics. What a miss for the City of New York and the NYC Department of Parks & Recreation, who approve permits for private entities to be vendors in #publicparks. Every lovely weekend, this park gets literally trashed by thousands of Brooklynites who carry their plastic-wrapped-brewskies from #ParkHouse into the park grounds, leaving messes like this. Of course: this all goes to a #landfill. We could avoid this mess with #circular services like Cup Zero or DeliverZero, or if these vendors (like Blank Street and the bar there) genuinely publicized and followed through on incentives for folks bringing their own mugs or cups. I think it's unacceptable for vendors to trash the very parks their business benefits from and for park-goers to do the same. 💁🏼♀️ Everyone here is complicit, to the detriment of the #wildlife that live here. I wish more Greenpointers would try to hold these establishments accountable to the trash they create and the culture of apathy they perpetuate by speaking up or at least, by bringing a #reusable or carrying in/carrying out their trash. #NYCparks #Greenpoint #NYC #trash #singleuse #circulareconomy #ourparksaretrashed

"Why [Invest] in Chicago's Far South!" Tuesday's Edition: Local Business Community I believe we as a city need to have serious conversations regarding this city's business community. This is not about passing the blame again but recognizing our business environment in the city changed drastically post-COVID 19. Go to any number of communities from Rogers Park to Morgan Park to Garfield Park and the commonalities are the same with persistent vacant storefronts. There are various components as to the challenges facing commercial landlords/owners and business tenants, such as the lack of employee attraction and retention, workforce and skills development, depopulation, high cost of operations in supplies and labor, costly and untimely regulations and fees, public safety, online market, over saturation, inequitable incentive structure for certain types of businesses (small businesses vs large national business incentive structure), inaccessible financial resources to remodel or expand operations depending on your business location. It may be advantageous for the city to host four to six business forums this year led by local Chambers of Commerce and/or Community Development Corporations (Forums: Southside, Far Southside, Near Westside, Far Westside, Northside, and Downtown). We need to re-examine our approach before throwing money in a wet paper bag by funding the same programs that are outdated and no longer impactful in this post-COVID and slightly post-inflation economy. Chicago's far south side has experienced successes and disappointments. We celebrate the successes of Blue Cross Blue Shield in Morgan Park, Pullman Redevelopment and National Park, and Discover in Chatham. But we also are concerned and disappointed with the closing of the Chatham Cinema, KFC closings, and the decades of neglect along Halsted and Michigan Avenue. Even nonprofits are getting crushed with financial burdens of doing way more and receiving way less as the demands are far exceeding the supply. Nonprofits are the last defense before an under-served community completely submerge. Our city's business community successes cannot be judged by Downtown's success alone. We must learn and understand the challenges within each side of town. Commercial vacancy is a virus that does not permeate in only one area but spreads eventually to every area of the city and it must be stopped. This virus exploits the weaknesses in every area. We cannot ignore it, neglect it, or hope it will get better. Our actions must be intentional, inclusive, unbiased, data driven, and sufficiently funded. https://lnkd.in/gXjsFxPg

Something we take for granted? The benefits (and relief) of a great neighbor. Yes, we can DoorDash anything we need, but nothing beats the feeling of having someone close by that you can count on. Borrowing some flour, brining the mail in while you’re away - It’s those little moments of support that make us feel connected in our communities. Speaking of good neighbors - I wanted to share a few of my favorite neighborhoods In Meridian. 1. The Oaks – A family-friendly neighborhood with spacious homes, walking trails, community parks, and a pool, perfect for active lifestyles. 2. Settlers Bridge – Known for its beautiful tree-lined streets, community pool, and easy access to parks, this neighborhood blends charm with convenience. 3. Paramount – Featuring a master-planned community with a variety of home styles, Paramount offers top-rated schools, parks, pools, and a clubhouse for its residents. Send me a DM if you’d like a list of homes for sale in these neighborhoods! #TheOaksMeridian #SettlersBridgeLiving #ParamountNeighborhood #MeridianRealEstate #MeridianIDHomes #FamilyFriendlyMeridian #MeridianNeighborhoods #BoiseMetroLiving #TreasureValleyRealEstate #CommunityLivingMeridian #MeridianID #MoveToMeridian #MeridianIDRealtor #HouseHuntingMeridian #MeridianNewHomes #ExploreMeridian #MeridianIDLife #BuySellMeridian #InvestInMeridian

In-N-Out has closed a store for the first time in its 75-year history. It's not about money. Store 193 in Oakland was making money. But it wasn't safe. The company chose its people over profit. It's a hard choice, but the right one. They're saying thanks to the community that supported them for 18 years. They promise to keep helping through their foundations. Simple truth: care for your people, always. #InNOut #SafetyFirst #CommunitySupport"

Community Connector, Published Author, Communications Specialist, & Bookworm | Applying my communications skills and volunteer experience to build transparent, creative, and authentic communities.
You see a coffee cup and I see a vision with a future of building community with the community. The people in Braddock are Braddock's biggest asset as some of us have been here for generations. When Rachael explained her vision for Paradigm Global Innovations I was ecstatic. It still even energizes me to think of a community space with community input and community vendors. I explained to her about how I called every grocery store near and far proposing a small stationary market and most of them said, "no" even though the closest grocery store is almost 2 miles away and isn't walkable in a town that's heavily reliant on public transportation. So we put it in our vision to include some small healthy food opportunities in Paradigm Place. Paradigm Place is currently teaching two vendors how to navigate running a business with education opportunities in it. We're going to create more experiences and opportunities for small businesses and explore ways to activate the community. The role of Community Engagement Consultant just felt right for me. We want to create this space with community in mind that was the point of the community needs survey. Slowly and intentionally we're building out this space as most quick things don't last and don't include great intentions. Yesterday, as the Paradigm Team sat in the rain under an umbrella we smiled and said, "we'll remember this day years from now." And we surely will. "We get to make this space whatever we want to make this space. We have 3 more shipping containers." - Rachael Afolabi So very proud of Tori Hirsh and DeAndra Rose Holley. We're working on incredible things. #communityengagement #communitydevelopment #communitybuilding
