Our next post meeting is next week and PI DAY no less!! Join with Alan Carmen and undependent Rock Island’s Peter Ruklic as we learn about how we can strengthen our community by designing our neighborhoods to be walkable and bikable. From our presenters: “undependent Rock Island is a local, citizen-based initiative promoting policy changes that recognize the critical nexus between people and infrastructure. We are specifically concerned about car-dependent design of transportation networks and buildings. We promote walkability and the use of bikes and mass transit to access essential goods and services. The health and economic benefitsof this approach are obvious and abundant. The environmental benefits are becoming ever more apparent. Our current focus is on the Hilltop Community Commercial Area (HCCA) in Rock Island – a walkable, bikeable, busable area providing a wide range of businesses and services for local and Quad City area residents. We recognize and promotethe economic, health, and environmental benefits of the HCCA. We are attempting to influence City policies and regulations, and their underlying assumptions, to sustain and improve this fragile asset. This is our adventure.” Please join us for this interesting discussion next week at Western Illinois University-Quad Cities Campus! Register here: https://lnkd.in/gG9AQ_SC

We have three, hopefully thought-provoking, articles from Savills Residential Research in this year's Cambridge University Land Society (CULS) annual magazine. The 2024 theme is '2050: Trends and Disruptions in Real Estate', which has given us the exciting chance to think about the built environment of the future. We have: 🏰 'The future of real estate research must be more interdisciplinary' from myself and Dr Kat Martindale, making the case for the blending of approaches, from architecture to economics to engineering, to better understand the cities of the future (pages 32-33) 🌳 'Do new eco-homes achieve a premium (and how much more do they cost)?' from Lucy Greenwood, looking at the prices buyers are willing to pay for a more energy efficient home (pages 46-47) 🏠 'The future of personal compromise in the housing market' where Daniel Hill and myself explore how buyers are having to compromise on their quality of life and aspirations to get onto the housing ladder (pages 90-91) It is no secret that we face profound challenges of increasing complexity in the built environment over the coming decades, which often feels tremendously daunting. But there is also immense opportunity to understand and augment the richness of our cities and buildings so that we will all better thrive in the places where we live and work. You can read the articles here, including a PDF download:

Senior Director of Field Clinical and Medical Training. Driven SME with a passion for traveling, training, and changing the landscape of neuromodulation.
It has always caught my eye when, in the midst of a planned walkway, a secondary path exists as a result of people making their own plan. I learned recently these are called “desire paths” and I’ve been thinking about that ever since. Urban planners coined the term to describe these alternative paths you see across college campuses, city parks, and likely any planned urban landscape. I can imagine the frustration when they meticulously plan a walkway, and then watch as humans carve out a cheeky corner cut off or connection across grass. But I wonder if they see the beauty in them as well. We know the shortest distance between two points is a straight line, thanks to Archimedes😏, and perhaps seeking out the most direct route between points is part of our evolution… a natural inclination of (some)humans to pursue efficiency. I like to think it’s more. To me, these desire paths demonstrate autonomy, a willingness to forge our own path even when a seemingly good one has been provided. That little worn trail between sidewalks is the whisper of a decision…an impulse to find another way to connect what we know to what we’ve yet to discover. It represents the irrepressible human spirit that will always be wandering. A planned walkway may show us where we should go, but desire paths are created when we step off the road and let our hearts decide the way. I think I’m going to try and do a little more listening to my heart. 🥰

Teys’ Brain Teasers about Complex Mixed Use Strata Schemes Michael Teys is a lawyer, academic, and long term #strata commentator who has now published his UNSW Thesis 'The evolution of the anticommons: Exploring the implications of mixed-use developments on urban renewal by collective sales'. In it he studies the dilemma and paradox that is created and exists in mixed use developments under strata and part #stratatitle systems when redevelopment is necessary or appropriate from urban planning and land use perspectives. Michael’s thesis hits all the strata high notes including the well known phrases: ‘the compact city’, ‘mixed use’, ‘strata’, ‘part strata’, ‘anti-commons’, ‘strata renewal’, ‘urban renewal’, ‘collective sales’ etc and address important questions and factors that cause and affect things. When I spoke to Michael about his research, he said the following things: ‘Mixed-use developments are a bit like elephants – fun to look at but I’d hate to own one.’ https://lnkd.in/eTewckSM
