#SUDEPActionDay2024 1 out of every 150 people with poorly controlled seizures or epilepsy die from SUDEP. Before April 7, 2024, I was unaware of SUDEP (Sudden Unexpected Death from Epilepsy). It wasn't until my brother passed away in his sleep that we learned seizures can lead to this risk. If you know anyone with seizures or epilepsy, please inform them about SUDEP and discuss it with their neurologist. Taking proactive steps can reduce risks and potentially save lives. There are resources out there, it’s a matter of having a conversation first. While it's too late for Jaaden, we can all help others avoid a similar fate. In honor of Jaaden Steward and others who have passed from SUDEP, the Steward family will be hosting a kickball fundraising event on Nov. 16th. We invite all who can to participate. All proceeds will be donated to the Epilepsy Foundation. Information can be found on the website listed below. https://lnkd.in/ewh-Sfua

"Where on the field is the $1 I'm paying for soda?" A famous scene from Moneyball where newly acquired DH David Justice asks why General Manager Billy Beane charges for soda in the club house. Jonah Hill's fictionalized character Peter Brand replies that "Billy likes to keep the money on the field" While the ownership of the soon to be Las Vegas A's is notoriously stingy, this scene was actually total creative liberty but it made a point that is relatable to many who work in the nonprofit world. When staff at nonprofits are forced to work with broken chairs, slow computers, and chronic understaffing, these things don't actually put more money into the program. They're symbolic sacrafices to demonstrate commitment to fans (donors) and more often than not management. There's a reason professional sports teams don't try and save money by having their players workout at local High School gyms. The reputational damage would make it more difficult to recruit players. What do we think it does to employee recruitment and retention in the nonprofit sector when the industry is defined by symbolic (and sometimes quite literal) vows of poverty? Great missions require great people and resources that allow them to perform at their best. Your soda money doesn't end up back on the field but it can pull money off of it if your badge of honor sacrafices conribute to employee turnover.

Facilitator | Author | Creating adult-adult cultures that unleash accountability, engagement and innovation
GoGoosey is my friend's company. She creates a quick-drying onesie that means you don't have to dress and change your kids after the pool, swimming pool, or splash park. If you are a parent, this is an obvious Godsend for easily the worst part about taking your kids from a swim. But now she has launched a Kickstarter because adults (surfers, swimmers, paddleboarders, etc.) also can't be bothered to get changed after their sport. So here it is - the Kickstarter for her unique onesie for women (men's version comes later). Launching a new physical product line in a burgeoning business is incredibly difficult. Supporting this Kickstarter, basically by pre-ordering the onesie, will allow her to add a product line to the successful kid's products and help the business go to the next level. Pledges include discount codes for any of the existing products as well. So if you or any of your family love the water it might be worth a look. #swimming #surfing #gogoosey https://lnkd.in/esWYbiJc

Across the Bay to Conquer Cancer was undoubtedly one of the most fun and exciting water-related charities worldwide, where over a hundred kitesurfer every summer dare to cross Port Phillip Bay in a 70km journey. All to raise money and awareness for Cancer. However, the business model was not scalable due to safety and limited size audience. Blending our purpose with our long term strategy took us to transition into what at the time was a relatively new water sport, paddle boarding creating @paddleacrossthebay. A 10km SUP challenge along Port Phillip Bay. Going from 100 participants to 500 in less than 5 years and raising the better part of a million dollars confirmed our thesis. Pivoting doesn't need to be starting all over again, but making subtle adjustments to what you offer and who you offering it to. https://lnkd.in/giBf_7Eq

Creating Community Impact, One Bowl at a Time 🏌️♂️ Yesterday, TurnBerry Acai had the privilege of being part of something bigger than ourselves. We joined forces with the Canada Shriners Hospital for their 13th Annual Invitational at Summerlea Golf & Country Club. The goal? To raise $1 million for life-changing medical imaging technology that keeps children safe. When we launched TurnBerry Acai 7 months ago, we didn’t just set out to make the best acai bowls in the city — we set out to make a difference. Our mission quickly evolved into "creating an everlasting community impact that transcends acai. One bowl at a time. One city at a time." 🌍 From university campuses to charity events like this one, being there for our community isn’t just a priority—it’s who we are. And no matter how fast we grow, this will never change. Should've prepped the 150 bowls in advance, but I've always been a crash course type of student haha! Could've been a disaster if dad was not here to carry the boat (insert David Goggins)! PS: I was a bit starstruck when I got to meet Montreal Canadiens' legend Chris Nilan haha! Can't forget my Junior A teammate and Hockey Saint-Laurent legend Jaden Lang 🏒 #CommunityImpact #TurnBerryAcai #CanadaShriners #AcaiForACause #GrowthMindset

Superbowl Squares for the kids! In an effort to raise money for the Miles for Miracles Team from Boston Children's Hospital for the 2024 Boston Marathon I am lucky to run in, I am doing a Superbowl squares fundraiser to support these brave kids! $20 per square, 50% of the proceeds supports his fundraising goal, and 50% goes to the winners following each quarter ($250 for 1st, 2nd, 3rd quarters and final score). How it works: Once all the squares have been selected, we will randomly pick numbers from 0-9 for each team in the Super Bowl, and assign that number to a particular row or column. These numbers represent the last number in the score of each team. In other words, if the score is AFC 17 - NFC 14, then the winning square is the one with an AFC number of 7, and an NFC number of 4. Since this is a Fund Raiser, 50% of the proceeds will go to the Charity Organization, and the other 50% will be distributed among the Users with a Winning Square. GET STARTED Use the following links to either enter your picks or show the current picks. Enter Your Picks ($20.00 per square) FIRST Click on the link to choose your squares. https://lnkd.in/e8kB2gty Username: Marathon Password: Chuck Show All Picks https://lnkd.in/eP-xbVq3 THEN Venmo your payment to @chuckblanchette please add comment: Squares for The Kids! Your support means the world. With your help, we can directly impact the lives of these courageous children and their families by: - Providing critical medical care to kids, including those from your community - Offering specialized care for complex diseases, unmatched anywhere else - Backing over 3,000 researchers developing groundbreaking treatments and cures - Funding patient programs like music and art therapy, bringing joy during hospital stays - Assisting patient families in crisis with urgent needs like food, clothing, and housing - Delivering compassionate, leading-edge care to every child in need We're already 64% to our $10,000 goal, and with under 100 days left until the 2024 Boston Marathon, every step counts. Our Executive Director of Canada SCORES Toronto Nick Taylor (He/Him) shares his thoughts on this recent interview led by Steve Paikin on his show The Agenda. Initially Nick was drawn in due to the topic, and ultimately kept watching due to the high value content being discussed by three folks in the business, sport and cause communities that Nick has met and respects for their contributions - Marco Di Buono , Bruce Kidd and Dan Cardoza. As a nonprofit organization in the youth development space, Canada SCORES Toronto launched in the GTA in 2024, but has 30 years of history behind it across North America through America SCORES and 10 years under the Canada SCORES banner in Vancouver. The organization was initially founded througha 1994 FIFA World Cup Legacy Program Fund. Canada SCORES is one of the emerging community programs that Marco mentions towards the end of the panel discussion that delivers programs for FREE. In fact, we deliver our FREE after school programs in partnership with local schools, where according to Bruce, his friends at the Toronto District School Board TDSB say they are no longer able to deliver the comprehensive curriculum for phyisical activity within their schools. Given that current statistics sugest that 58% of parents say financial constraints are limiting their ability to keep kids in activities, programs such as Canada SCORES can fill a vital gap in our schools and communities to ensure an includive, safe, fun and "whole child" focus curriculum and programs are available to support the well being and social emotional development of children and youth. We should pay attention to Bruce's words when he sugests Gordie Howe would never make the NHL today as he would not fit into the "class" system that exists around the current professionalized youth sport sector. How many children may never realize their dreams of playing and competing in sport because of financial barriers to entry? We should also note what Marco shared when he said that an investment of only $1.00 can result in $13.00 of savings in the form of reduced health care costs to the system and a recution in youth justice expenses. Can you think of a better way to invest a dollar? If you can, consider making a gift to Canada SCORES. You can support the impact of our work that has been building for 10 years in Vancouver, and is about to launch this Fall in the Greater Toronto Area. https://lnkd.in/eWBrp_V At Canada SCORES, we believe we can be part of the solution to the problems called out by these three sector leaders. We welcome interested folks to reach out to our Execeutive team leaders in Toronto and Vancouver with any questions you may have about how you can make an impact in the lives of vulnerable children and youth. #CanadaSCORES #CanadaSCORESTO #CanadaSCORESVan #AmericaSCORES #YouthDevelopment #SocialEmotionalLearning #Sport #Recreation #BarrierFreeSport #JumpStart #YMCA #Donate #Support #Soccer #Poetry #Community
Last night, Marco Di Buono (President, Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities) joined The Agenda with Steve Paikin on TVO to discuss how affordability barriers are impacting kids' access to sport. Joined by Dan Cardoza (YMCA of Greater Toronto) and celebrated Olympian & academic Bruce Kidd, the panel discussed the importance of building an inclusive, accessible and safe environment for all kids and the opportunities available to make lasting and meaningful change across Canada.
