Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Director of Programs and Services at Center for Independent Futures
"There's been study after study that has shown that people do better academically, they do better with self-care, they have better overall outcomes, they're healthier and happier when they're in a community versus an institution." Take some time out of your day to watch this brief documentary (20 minutes) that sheds light on the systemic issues in Illinois related to housing and programming for individuals with disabilities and complex needs. This is NOT a new issue, and I am deeply grateful that there is more attention on this to create awareness and meaningful change. Even just implementing ASL training for staff providing support services to disabled folks will allow for more person-centered care and opportunities (see Ed's story). If you are interested in learning more about -finding a network -gathering information and receiving a roadmap to create inclusive community housing -finding person-centered services for disabled individuals residing in the community, reach out to Center for Independent Futures! https://lnkd.in/grsCTihR

Healing can be a guided journey or an epiphany, and everything in-between. Whether an organisation is working with people from socially disadvantaged backgrounds, blue-collar workers, aspiring micro-entrepreneurs and farmers, young teachers, tertiary students, or people with disabilities, healing requires a ‘safe space’ for people to reflect on their lives and the assurance that they will not be judged. #ArtofHealing #HealingforSocialImpact #GreenligntMovement

Meet Sam. Sam is a Youth Development Worker. We asked Sam what it means to work in a Foyer. “Foyer means an opportunity to change the path of a young person. It means empowerment to chase the future that you want. It is a safety net so you can take positive risks towards the life that you want” “The impact that it has from providing a space where people believe in you is so powerful and life changing and impossible to measure. It's housing, it's a physical safe and secure space where your needs are met so you can focus on planning for the future rather than just surviving.” #AdvantagedThinking #youthhomelessnessmatters #LifeSkills #YouthEmpowerment #FoyerNetwork #BuildMoreFoyers #FoyerCommunities #YouthFoyers #50FoyersBy2030 #TransformingLives #EndYouthHomelessness #JulieCollinsMP #HousingMinister #EmpowermentThroughEducation #EducationForYouth Launch Housing

On October 5, we celebrate World #Teachers Day! The pivotal role of teachers impacts children and youth beyond the class rooms, which makes them fundamental actors in promoting #inclusion and in shaping society. With the right tools, they can break down prejudices about disability in schools and improve the future prospective of learners with disability, including those is conflict-affected areas. It is thus important to continue supporting teachers with training on inclusive teaching methods and with adequate equipment to meet the needs of learners with disabilities to empower them. “Global aid to education has levelled off over the past five years and nearly a quarter of governments had decreased public resources for education in 2022.” ➡️ Learn more about teachers’ challenges in our report “Always included”: https://lnkd.in/e4WVNm43

When we talk about housing through a #neuroinclusive lens, many don't immediately see their connection to it. For instance, therapists, those managing recreational centers, working in banks, providing transportation, or running the local coffee shop might not see their role as related to housing. However, #suitable and #sustainable #housing extends beyond the physical structure. It encompasses all interactions within the community. Every service, every interaction, and every role contributes to creating an inclusive environment where everyone feels at home. Let's broaden our perspective and recognize that we all play a part in shaping neuroinclusive housing. The joint initiative between The Sinneave Family Foundation and the Accessibility Institute at Carleton University was preceded by another great initiative which put forward 8 elements necessary to secure suitable and sustainable housing for autistic adults: - self-determination - medical and mental health support - community care, positive relationships, and social connection - financial and economic stability - housing infrastructure and suitability - physical, emotional, and social safety - support systems, including natural and paid support - technological support and other tools. When considering civic engagement and political participation, policies and practices must be inclusive to allow EVERYONE to be involved and have their voice heard.
Head of EMEA Accessibility and Disability Inclusion @ Google | ADC Founder | Advisor | Board Member | Keynote Speaker
“We are constantly learning from our partners about new ways to present information and improve MichiganVoting.org’s accessibility. No one should be left behind because they couldn’t access accurate information about voting in Michigan, and we maintain MichiganVoting.org to help fill that gap.” And this is how you do it. Before I studied sign, I didn't know it was a different language with its own history, grammar, and regional variants. Only with humble partnership with the disability community does one learn what's broken and how to fix it. It's not hard, but the willingness for leaders to realise they might not know everything is sometimes also a barrier. #a11y #accessibility
