‘Young Grant Makers learning report’ are words I would love to read more often! 🤩 Really looking forward to reading through and learning from Islington Giving’s latest report.
📣 New report drop! 📣 Our 2023-2024 Young Grant Makers learning report is out now! This year, former Young Grant Makers, Izzy Petriti and Freya Johnson, took the lead - bringing fresh insights on what young people in Islington need and how we can make funding decisions that truly reflect their voices. “Overall, this role has given me a lot of experience and a lot of joy. It is so important for young people to be listened to, taken seriously, and exposed to the world of decision-making and leadership.” ~ Freya, former Young Grant Maker and 2023-2024 Co-Lead In November, we will be launching our full Participatory Grant Making report; an overview of our experience and learning over the last seven years of sharing power with residents in the grant making process. Curious about participatory grant making? Got questions on how we share power with local residents in the funding process? Drop them in the comments – we’d love to hear from you and explore this further in our upcoming report! ⬇️ Thank you to everyone who made it happen including our Islington Giving Coalition Partners and City Bridge Foundation. Read the full report on our website via the link in our comments. #YoungGrantMakers #IslingtonGiving #YoungLeaders #YoungPeople #YouthEmpowerment #ParticipatoryGrantMaking #Islington

Inspiring insights from the closing session of the National Association for Community College Entrepreneurship (NACCE) annual conference! Moderator Christine Pigsley, PhD, led a thought-provoking discussion on mobilizing resources for underserved and rural communities. Here are the key takeaways from the leaders' call to action: - Engage with elected officials and celebrate successes. - Reach out to students in the margins and offer assistance. - Connect with your college foundation to jointly seek support in meaningful ways. - Collaborate strategically with partners for progress. - Listen attentively to the voices of rural communities. We appreciate thought leaders Jerry Edmonds III, Ed.D Christy Blake Johnson Marcy Euler CFRE Christine Pigsley, PhD D. Galen DeHay for sharing ways to take action. Empowering words to drive positive change and foster community development. #NACCE #CommunityEmpowerment #ResourceMobilization

"Continuing to do what we are currently doing but doing it harder or smarter is not likely to produce very different outcomes. Real change starts with recognising that we are part of the systems we seek to change. Our actions will not become more effective until we shift the nature of the awareness and thinking behind the actions." Mid Coast 4 Kids are pleased to continue our engagement with The Possibility Partnership (TPP). TPP is a growing collaboration between NFP community service organisations, communities, government, philanthropy and business. Its ambition is to change the purpose and practice of Australia’s human services system, so everyone, especially people and communities experiencing complex and entrenched disadvantage, can live the lives they value. Our engagement with TPP is a key strategy to achieve our strategic objective, to positively influence organisations, governments, communities and other stakeholders to reform service systems to be more responsive to communities. Last week, TPP member representatives and other key stakeholders from across the community came together in Taree to consider some of the communities key challenges, and how we might work together to create positive change. We toured Taree on a bus and local members introduced visiting members to key community resources and challenges that later became the subject of robust conversation. We look forward to continuing the discussion and working together to lead systemic change for positive social good. Expanding Our Circle: Sesera Youth’s Piglet Project Grows Stronger The Sesera Youth’s Piglet Project is thrilled to announce an exciting new phase in our journey of community empowerment and shared success for the first group Each of the families that have flourished with their piglets are now stepping into a role of leadership and mentorship. They are selecting ten more families based on specific criteria, presenting them to our project for consideration. Upon approval, these new families will join a savings group, with their nominating family as the chairperson. This isn’t just about adding numbers; it’s about strengthening the fabric of our community. The savings group serves as a platform for financial education, mutual support, and collective growth, all under the watchful guidance of the Sesera Youth’s Piglet Project. Imagine the impact: a network of families, interconnected and resilient, each contributing to and benefiting from the group’s collective wisdom and resources. This is the vision we’re bringing to life—one where every member is both a learner and a leader. Let’s celebrate this new chapter where empowerment is not just given, but earned and shared. Together, we’re building more than a project; we’re building a community legacy.

VP & ED @ Forsyth Tech Foundation | Advocate for Equitable Philanthropic Education | Philanthropy Nerd | Consultant
Trust-based philanthropy is having a rough time of it. It’s great to see The David and Lucile Packard Foundation is getting it. However, capacity and sustainability are two different concepts. We need more strategic, trusting, collaborative philanthropic partnership aimed at addressing long term sustainable impact. This means bringing together multiple philanthropic funders willing combine efforts to actually create long term sustained impact. The systemic problems we face need more than philanthropy that seek only to pilot “A” impact. We need a culture of philanthropy focused on sustaining the impact until the problem is addressed. I know I would rather spend my time with partners in the work rather than be involved in the equivilant of a philanthropic hit and run. That simply creates a flash in the pan and undermines organizational/institutional trust. Don’t add capacity without long term sustainability.
Marissa Guerrero, PhD, Civil Society and Leadership Program Officer, joined Susan Misra of Aurora Commons to discuss the importance of investing in #systemschange in this Stanford Social Innovation Review article.
