At the ULI #HousingOpp2024 Conference held in Austin this month, housing experts from across the country discussed their experiences and solutions to a variety of housing challenges. Although there has been some progress, affordable housing groups are still challenged with the financial flexibility to address changing needs as well as cover ongoing social services while also maintaining robust community engagement to keep neighbors informed about housing developments. The role of our housing authority’s is the allocation or resources received from the constituents. Conversely, the role of business in a capitalistic society is the financial gain of the stakeholders. Until private business sees the problems that face our society as a threat to their ability to achieve that end, they will create solutions to isolate the problems from view. Policy needs to reflect an inclusive approach to alleviating our issues. Some of the greatest minds in the world are probably living on the streets. How do we organize a way to ask their thoughts on the issue, instead of instituting policy that increases tensions between private and public sectors through quid pro quo zoning ordinances and lackluster financial incentives?

"Forty percent of Brevard County is actually one paycheck away from potentially losing housing," Pagliarini said. "It means that 40% of our community is at risk of losing their housing if they have that major life event that's happening." In my pro bono work with legal aid, I have seen time and time again how rising rents and ensuing evictions have contributed to the housing crisis. It doesn't take much to find oneself suddenly unhoused, even when employed full time as wages simply aren't keeping up with the cost of living. An injury, medical issue, personal crisis, storm event, insurance premium spikes, and skyrocketing cost of living can quickly throw someone onto the street... homeowners and renters alike. There are people working very hard to combat this issue, and it's an uphill battle. #realestate #realestatelaw #housing #housingmarket #housingcrisis #unhoused #homelessness #affordablehousing #evictions #foreclosure #homeownership #renting #home #homeownersinsurance #costoflivingcrisis
The #1 reason people are unsheltered is because of the lack of affordable housing. Our community is full of innovation and opportunities, let's use that same spirit of ingenuity and exploration to create a community where every neighbor has a safe place to call home. #noplacelikehome #housingforall

As the housing crisis deepens, "social housing" has emerged as a potential solution. But what does it really mean? This thought-provoking article examines the varied definitions of social housing and the complexities of current proposals. Kristen Hackett, a community organizer with My Eden Voice, raises important questions about financing models, particularly the risks of relying heavily on bonds—challenging us to consider whether these approaches truly serve those most in need or if they inadvertently prioritize middle-income residents. For anyone involved in urban planning, policy, or community development, this analysis offers crucial insights into the future of affordable housing. https://lnkd.in/g_Dv3CV3 #SocialHousing #AffordableHousing #HousingPolicy

For many, cost of housing and rising inflation rates this past year meant questions like “Can I afford to keep my house?”, “Where will I go if I lose my house?”, and “What are my options for safe and affordable housing?” were certainly on people’s mind. For Community Justice Initiatives of Waterloo Region (CJI), these types of questions are ones they hear daily – and are addressing. Read more about their Home Share program, and how we at Kindred also help turn plans into action to address safe and affordable housing in our local communities: https://lnkd.in/g8nFuGXV #SafeandAffordableHousing #CJI #HousingCrisis #OntarioHousingCrisis #AltHousingSolutions

The City of Toronto's 2024 budget takes bold steps toward advancing health equity for the city. Our team Kwame McKenzie, Rishika Wadehra and Jesse Rosenberg believe there's room for improvement, however. The 2024 #budget includes funding to expand shelter services, for example, but it doesn't have long-term solutions for #housing. The City of Toronto needs to commit to ending chronic homelessness within 10 years. Funding the Scarborough busway will help advance equity for those who rely on the #TTC. But we need the City of Toronto to build a truly equitable transit system that can benefit everyone regardless of where live in the city. Mayor Olivia Chow's 2024 budget includes critical funding for services such as drop-in centres, youth programs and community recreation. But it's still not enough to combat the cost-of-living crisis. #Poverty reduction must be a central focus for future city budgets. With regard to mental health and well-being, the City of Toronto can become a leader and develop a fully funded strategy that improves the mental health of Torontonians. Wellesley is looking forward to continuing our work with our #ThriveTO partners. What do you think about the 2024 city budget? https://lnkd.in/e_eSsFkU
