💣 All bets are off Just over six years ago, betting on football was illegal in Brazil. Today, betting companies sponsor almost 90% of the 60 clubs in the country’s top three national divisions. Online bookmakers account for the three biggest shirt sponsorship deals in Brazil at the moment, including Palmeiras’s soon-to-be-announced partnership with Sportingbet (worth up to BRL 170 million, or USD 27.5 million, a year) and those of Brazil’s two most popular clubs, Flamengo and Corinthians, with Pixbet and Esportes da Sorte, respectively. Club Athletico Paranaense, a leading Brazilian football club, has temporarily suspended its sponsorship agreement with Esportes da Sorte following allegations of illegal betting activities and money laundering. The football club has confirmed that Esportes da Sorte’s branding will no longer be visible on its kits or in its stadium until the matter is resolved. This decision was taken in response to concerns surrounding the operator's legal standing. The suspension comes after Esportes da Sorte was notably absent from the Secretariat of Prizes and Bets’ (SPA) latest list of operators authorized to continue business operations through the transitional period from October to January, ahead of Brazil’s newly regulated betting market launch. Any betting company not featured on the SPA’s approved list is considered illegal and may face a ban by the National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel). Athletico Paranaense’s official statement indicated that the club is currently seeking clarification on “recently reported facts” concerning Esportes da Sorte’s compliance and legal status. Brazil: Atlético-MG May Not Renew Sponsorship Agreement with Betano. Atlético Mineiro, currently sponsored by the betting company Betano, is unlikely to renew the contract with the company. It's worth noting that the club has had one of the most significant sponsorships in Brazilian football since January 2021. However, they are seeking better financial terms and are already in negotiations with other brands. Galo's objective is to, at a minimum, equal the annual R$42 million paid by Betfair to Cruzeiro. Among the options considered are three other betting companies: Parimatch, Superbet, and Bet.bet. For example, Parimatch pays R$27.5 million per year to Botafogo. Meanwhile, Superbet, which sponsors Fluminense and São Paulo, spends R$42 million and R$52 million, respectively, on each of these clubs.
