Regenerative design can increase urban green-blue areas in European cities by 42 percent. A new report by Sweco highlights the potential of 22 European cities to enhance liveability, sustainability, and resilience through regenerative design in the built environment. 🌍 Today, as we celebrate #EarthDay, we urge EU policymakers to #RestoreNature.   The Nature Restoration Law (NRL) aims to rejuvenate ecosystems, bolster #biodiversity, address #climatechange, and mitigate natural disasters. Well-defined urban greening objectives must enhance the integration of vegetation into urban planning, encompassing public spaces, infrastructure, and urban design such as roofs and facades.    🌿 It’s time to support the Nature Restoration Law, ensuring the well-being of European citizens and future generations.

I am thrilled to share that I have been appointed as the joint coordinator of a task group on nature-based solutions for climate-resilient buildings and communities led by the CIB, International Council for Research and Innovation in Building and Construction. As a Research Officer at the Construction Research Centre, I lead nature-based solutions projects as part of our Climate Resilient Built Environment Initiative. We had a great session on Tuesday, talking about nature and cities with Benjamin Caspar from DG ENV, Susan Mackenzie from Google and Javier Dorao from Crea Madrid Nuevo Norte. 3 key takeaways for me: - The EU Nature Restoration law will be a step change in how cities develop, conserve and benefit from nature. - The social benefits of nature in cities are as important as the environmental benefits. - Public and private sector need to come together to deliver on our green spaces for nature. Cities should put in place Urban Greening Plans which can help to direct and enable the private sector to align their plans and contributions.
