They’re saving lives—and the planet. The forward-thinking innovators behind Vektor Medical, Inc., an AI-based cardiac localization and analysis technology, and Fjord Phyto, a unique participatory science platform that intertwines climate science and tourism, took home the top prizes during the inaugural Chancellor’s Innovation Awards celebration. 🏆 The Chancellor’s Innovation Awards, which opened for nominations last September, were created to recognize standouts in two distinguished categories, each with a cash prize: Faculty Startup of the Year and Student/Alumni Innovator of the Year. This year’s winners represent just two of the more than 1,000 startups that have launched out of UC San Diego since the university’s founding in 1960. In the last three fiscal years alone, 49 startups have been licensed from university technologies, and more than $51 million in funding has been acquired by UC San Diego startups through venture capital investment, private equity, mergers and acquisitions over the last three calendar years. #AI #ClimateScience #Startup #UCSanDiego

I was invited to speak today as #keynote panelist at Future Labs Live Basel and share my thoughts as #investor on ‚„How do we create a synergised lab community at the forefront of science, innovation and digital technology?“ my fellow panelists included Vincent R. (moderator, CSEM )(euRobotics aisbl) Zisis Kozlakidis (World Health Organization) Dr. Bernd Liepert and Thomas Bauernhansl (Technologiemanagement am Fraunhofer IPT). What did I share with panel and audience: 1) collaboration and multidisciplinary approach is key to realize innovative idea 2) academia to provide holistic training to scientists to become entrepreneurs, taking the risk founding a start up 3) public-private partnership and funding is key to finance basic research and support spin-off from university to generate first data to enable financing round with private investors 4) European investors are rather risk averse which on one hand leads to good investment and higher return of investment than other territories investors but this means huge challenge for European start ups to access financing 5) need for collaboration between industry and regulators to develop pragmatic legislation while ensuring patients safety at highest priority to also support innovation and not unrealistic burden for start ups 6) increase cooperation between big corporates and start ups to accelerate innovation and time to market 7) encourage people, especially those with Know-how in the field to consider also direct investment where they can also support start ups with Know-how 8) and finally what is in my heart to increase significantly the number of women in venture capital firms as well as private investors to change current situation where female founders hardly get financing from investors We need diversity in all aspects to solve the today and tomorrow problems Thanks very much to Ellie Whitehead for organizing this very interesting event and Vincent R. for excellent moderation and my fellow panelists for stimulating discussions #start-ups #innovation #collaboration #meaningful investment #multi-disciplinary #female founders #public-private partnership #Innosuisse #sustanability

We have the blueprints of success – but we must go further. Unlocking regional capital and devolving decision-making on innovation spending will be the next stage in developing the wider UK innovation economy and likely a key focus for the next Government....
Important article by Kath Mackay, highlighting the need to support life science companies outside the Golden Triangle. Birmingham Health Innovation Campus and PHTA are set to play a crucial role here - providing lab space to not only regional spin-outs, but creating space for innovators nationwide to expand and grow. SOWING THE SEEDS OF THE FUTURE 🌱 ... and what has that to do with a visitor's badge? It's Monday, and our own Mikael is back after a week-long, intensive summer school at BII. The aim of the summer school was to build the future startups within biotech and biosolutions. And that it did! Despite Denmark enjoying some of the most innovative research environments, leading to countless of spinouts, our founders still experience barriers to success. Barriers we ought to tear down, if we are to reap the benefits of those future seeds, including: 👣 "There is no try, only do": Founders are not only embarking to change global markets, but must also to change themselves, becoming leaders and not just scientists. We need to give them the leadership tools to succeed. 💡 "Publish and perish": Founders must unlearn everything they've been taught at university, as if they publish their groundbreaking idea before having a patent, the whole business can be killed then and there. Therefore, patents and IP rights are crucial. 🚧 "Regulation can kill your idea": Regulation is designed to manage yesterday's risks, not to incentivize the benefits of future ideas. That's great to avoid re-making earlier mistakes, but we miss innovation to deliver on planetary health. Updating European regulation is indeed needed. ⚰ "The Valley of Death is real - meet its twin": The deeptech sector is unfortunate to experience a known Valley of Death, due to the lack of funding between MVP and commercialization. And it now also have a twin, being lacking test and demo facilities to actually test your MVP. We need to secure access to world-class facilities, if we are to keep successful startups in Europe. You get the idea. We have lots of work ahead of us to keep Denmark on the forefront. And that's the mission of DI Bio. Oh, and the visitor's badge? As a way to keep BioInnovation Institute present in your mind, visitors are encouraged to moist the badge and plant it to see your new chamomile plant grow in your home. Neat. That's how you sow the seeds of the future. 🚀
