Green hydrogen represents a transformative solution for the energy transition, offering a sustainable and versatile energy carrier that can decarbonize various sectors. Produced using renewable energy sources, green hydrogen emits no carbon during combustion, making it a key player in achieving net-zero emissions economies. Its ability to store and transport energy from abundant renewable sources to energy-hungry regions is particularly valuable. Moreover, green hydrogen can significantly reduce emissions in hard-to-abate industries such as steel production, long-haul transport, shipping, and aviation. As nations and industries collaborate to expand renewable energy and improve grid efficiency, green hydrogen stands out as a crucial component of a cleaner, secure, and affordable energy future.

Sheffield steel sharpens to green hydrogen future. By Dominic Ellis Sheffield’s steelmakers could save up to 3,500 tonnes of carbon emissions each year by switching from natural gas to locally produced green hydrogen, a Government-funded study supported by the city’s industry has found. The project led by energy company E.ON, Chesterfield Special Cylinders, the University of Sheffield’s Energy Institute and other partners across the region is exploring ways to generate green hydrogen at the Blackburn Meadows renewable energy park, which can then be used as a cleaner fuel source for Sheffield’s steelmakers and other energy-intensive industries. The early stages of the project found strong desire from steelmakers and other industries to find a cleaner alternative to natural gas in industrial processes. Switching steelmaking to being fuelled by hydrogen could be commercially viable, the project found, and sustainable over the longer term. It could maintain the performance and product quality for manufacturers with carbon emissions 41.8% lower than if using natural gas. That means the three manufacturers taking part in the initial trials could save around 3,500 tonnes of CO2 each year. https://lnkd.in/dDQ7-29R

Mitsubishi Corporation is investing $690 million to build the world's largest green hydrogen plant in the Netherlands in collaboration with Dutch renewable energy company Eneco. The Eneco Diamond Hydrogen project aims to commence construction in 2026, with hydrogen production starting in 2029 using Eneco's wind farms. The plant is expected to produce 80,000 tonnes of hydrogen annually, nearly 30 times more than any existing facility. The scale is intended to reduce the cost of green hydrogen production, addressing the current higher costs compared to fossil fuel-based methods. Mitsubishi aims to leverage the project for further global expansion of green hydrogen initiatives

Pioneering steps will leverage the abundant renewable energy resources to produce green hydrogen for European markets, reinforcing the global shift towards sustainable energy solutions. The government is launching a subsidy scheme for smaller electrolysis projects for the production of hydrogen with sustainable energy. The amount of almost €250 million should provide 100 megawatts of electrolysis capacity. The government hopes to use this money to help realize 5 to 10 smaller projects throughout the country, so that several companies and local authorities can gain experience with electrolysis. To ensure that more and more renewable hydrogen is produced in the Netherlands, the government wants as many parties as possible to gain experience with electrolysis (the process for making renewable hydrogen). https://lnkd.in/gTsRa_Pi
