When we print on DLP printers the models are built bottom-up. There is a resin vat on the bottom and and the model is printed upside-down. That puts a weight limit on bottom-up DLP printers because once the model gets too big and too heavy the supporters can't hold it in place and the model can fall of and fail. With a top-down ("sunken") DLP printer the light source is on the top and the platform which lowers. That allows the models to be much bigger because they are supported by a platform. And that allows supports to be much thinner, making it less likely to damage the surface of the print. #3dprinter #3dprinting #DLP #additivemanufacturing

3D printers and Arduinos are amazing for getting stuff done fast! This was a really simple rig upgrade but created such a valuable quality monitoring tool. Specification - to allow the current draw of of each stepper motor to be monitored in real time during run-in phase, the help identify any manufacturing defects. 6 hours to develop a working solution and rapid prototype hardware & firmware and design bracket. 20 hours to complete rig upgrade. Potential cost saving buy capturing manufacturing defects before they enter the field ~£40k pa (conservative estimate)
