As an HBCU student, I know firsthand the power of the education I am receiving. There is never a question when it comes to the quality of education compared to other institutions. However, it's not just about the education. It's the experience - the HBCU experience - that sets it apart from any other. Believe me when I say, it's unlike anything you'll find elsewhere. ❤️ #HBCU #HigherEducation #ExperienceMatters

The reaccreditation journey of Knoxville College is something that I have followed over the past few years since I learned that Knoxville is home to the only HBCU in the East Tennessee Region. Knoxville College was established in 1875 as a center of education, social justice, and economic building through a liberal arts education. Within higher education, it is important to make sure that while building up and investing in our established institutions, we are also preserving and investing in our historical institutions, such as our Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Historically Minority Serving Institutions, which provide a great service to students who have historically been kept out of our higher education system. With that, there are only 7 HBCUs in the state of Tennessee: -American Baptist College (Nashville, TN) -Fisk University (Nashville, TN) -Lane College (Jackson, TN) -LeMoyne Own College (Memphis, TN) -Meharry Medical College (Nashville, TN) -Tennessee State University (Nashville, TN) -Knoxville College (Knoxville, TN) Looking at this list, some of these institutions are inaccessible due to location for many students in East Tennessee who may be looking for an HBCU. Students who may not have the financial means to move 4+ hours west within the state, let alone to other states. Students who may not want to leave an established support system of peers who relate to them and their lived experiences. The ability to be able to pursue an education is a privilege in itself, heightened by the ability to move to pursue that education. Access to a quality and affordable education is paramount in the Southern Region, where over 50% of Black Americans live according to a Pew Research Center Fact Sheet (linked below). All students deserve to have access to an institution that is affordable, where they will have a quality education, and where they will feel supported by their peers, educators, and administrators. https://lnkd.in/eYwEGHCU.

As an HBCU alumni working in higher ed, I've seen this slight decline at PWIs as well. There has to be an exploration to what are the deciding factors of our young Black men not attending college and especially an HBCU and initiatives to improve these numbers. #highered #educatedblackman #youngblackandeducated.
